for you. I'll light a candle for you and your family today.

I am currently reading Heart and Hands, slowly but surely. I can't seem to concentrate on much lately with trying to figure out holiday things and the cat who keeps trying to attack the book. You think at 12 years old the cat would have grown out of it by now.

mamarabbit,

how are you doing today?

I was wondering if anyone here is planning to sit the NARM in this next year? If so, what are you doing to prepare for it? If you recently took it, what did you do to prepare for it?

My goal is to take it in August. I have my PEP stuff ready to go in and am just waiting for my financial aid overage next month to send it in. I am an AAMI student and not totally sure what work to be concentrating on to help me prepare. I am a bit nervous because it sounds like it is far away, but it isn't really all that long off.

Has anyone seen or read this book? What are your thoughts on it?

I'm not sure how I feel about books like that at this point, but it is something we discussed recently. These are a couple of the points made A- the information in books like that come from intensive ultrasounds of multiple (dozens? hundreds?) pregnant women. B- books like that tend to reinforce the idea that the growing fetus is an independent being, instead of being a part of the whole, which is the pregnant woman. It seems to reinforce this belief in our society that what the mother does/says/hears/feels does not affect the baby.

We watched a short video clip from an Italian commercial in class of an ultrasound, and at first the mother is happy and the baby is showing no stress. Then a man starts yelling (husband? it's in Italian) at the woman and she starts stressing, and the baby starts reacting to the sounds of doors slamming (? is what it sounds like). You can see the baby react in utero to external sounds and the stress of the mother. It's a very interesting video.

I was reading the comments on this book and it looks like the pictures are of clay models. I think its an interesting concept but, I agree with the concerns above about ultrasounds, etc.

I very much agree with you.

also- I believe that video is a part of the bradley method curriculum- it really is good. I think it makes parents think a lot.

Right. Because it is clay models, I am more drawn to it. There was another book out there with tons of pictures but they are all of fetuses that were about to be aborted which I don’t want to support. I am pro choice but it just feel ethically wrong to me.

I was looking specifically for a book that focuses on the growth of the fetus in a picture format and not so much on the mother. It's very exciting for expecting moms to see a real life picture of what their baby looks like at that week. This book goes week to week with a description of the growth. I have tons of books focused on the mother. Plus, I just love pictures

I might pick it up and see if it's good. Did anyone see the discory special? I saw it a few years ago and can't remember much about it.

You mean Discovery's "From Conception to Birth"?

I have it, and I was not impressed. I found it at a used book store, or else I never would have bought it sight unseen.

It spends a lot less time on the actual development of the baby and more on the parents than I expected. If I could go through and just edit together the footage of the developing fetus, that would be one thing, but the show as-is would not be suitable (IMO) for someone who is planning an OOH birth. It is extremely medically-minded.

HI! This is my first time posting on this thread, as I am signing up for the Midwife-To-Be program in the next couple of days. Is there anyone here that is currently doing this program? I plan on going through the PEP process for my CPM after I finish the academics. I have been assisting a HBMW for almost three years now and I am ready to take the next step and have all these births count towards something, KWIM? I am so excited...

Thanks for the review. I won't bother with the video then.

We are OK, the airport terrorist/protest situation is done but major backlash all over the country. It was soooo close to civil war there for a few days. Who would've thought in such a usually peaceful country.

Welcome! I'm a student with AAMI, doing my bookwork first and then an apprenticeship in a couple years.

I don’t know which one it was but the author/photographer was Lennart Nilsson.

So glad you are doing well and no civil war broke out!!!

^^^ You mean the famous A Child is Born? I had no idea! It is such a popular book. I wonder how many people know this. Where did you find out?

Ah here it is: Lennart Nilsson About halfway through the interview.

Hi, my first time posting as well. I'm signing up for the midwife to be program as well next month. I know one woman who is doing the program and she likes it, but I've not heard much from any others. I'll be doing the academic to start, then apprenticing hopefully next fall after we move. I'm excited too! Nice to know another person doing that program.

hey ladies... I was planning on going to FSTM, but after LOTS and LOTS of thinking I've decided that that program is really just not for me.

I'm also set to stay in Florida though... I love it here, and we're about to buy a house! I need a midwifery program that will allow me to work in Florida. Unfortunatly that gives me a tough predicament.... there really isn't another school that will fit me, so I've decided to wait. I'm putting it into G-d's hands... I hope there will be a program that will fit me well when I'm ready to study formally, or that Florida will soon accept a distance program.

Untill then I do want to continue studying.... I'm thinking I just want to study on my own, but maybe I would do a distance program. Money doesn't permit me to spend thousands currently on a program, so I'm thinking maybe i'll just study on my own for the time being.... and I was hoping you ladies might be able to give me some help with that? I'ld love to hear some thoughts/opinions or reccomendations of what to study.

rebirth, if you want to study on your own but with some direction, I'd recommend the Midwife-to-Be program. It's VERY cheap, do at your own pace. I know a lot of women ultimately chose NOT to do that program because it's not very in depth but to have something that will give you a decent direction while waiting could be good.
thanks! I'll look at that program. It sounds like it might be a good "in the meantime" program.

This is exactly why I chose the MTD program, because I wanted to start my academics, not have it cost an arm and a leg to start, to work at my own pace, AND my back-up doula is doing it with me. Once I complete the PEP process to get my CPM, then I plan on enrolling in NCM to get my bachelors, masters and PhD, because I want to teach when I am older.
