Does anyone know the candidates stand on breastfeeding promotion? The only thing I found was this blog from someone who worked for Hillary http://www.hillaryclinton.com/blog/print/?id=5517

I don't really know where most of the candidates stand, but I do remember from a recent issue of Mothering that Mitt Romney was involved in reversing a Ban the Bags type thing when he was governor.

Peggy wrote about it in her "A Quite Place" and you can read it online at http://www.mothering.com/guest_edito...place/144.html.

Unfortunately, that was The Other Mitt Romney - the one who was a liberal Governor of Massachussets, not the one who's running for President as a social conservative.

Its too bad Hillary's not doing more to promote a pro-mom/family agenda. I'd love to see her take up bf-ing support, paid family leave, better child care etc. I think I remember Elizabeth Edwards gently slamming her for not being the candidate most supportive of a woman's agenda. I can kind of sympathize; Hillary probably figures she's got all these obstacles to being the first female president, she can't afford to alienate any men. When she was in office she might feel free to act differently. I'm not necessarily supporting her - I'm undecided, though I like most of the dems better than the republicans in general.

Its an interesting question. Which candidate is a closet lactivist?

I'm bumping this thread because I think It's a very important issue for lactivists to be discussing!!

I wonder where Ron Paul stands on Breastfeeding promotion. He is an OB afterall! And he's very supportive of homeschooling....so he must value families. I'd like to see more pro-mom messages from all of the candidates. I def. thought Hillary would be talking about it more.

Keep chatting about this ladies... it's really interesting to hear what you ahve to say!

It's a shame that being an OB is not the same as being pro-NIP or even pro-breastfeeding.

yes, it's odd to me that politicians who profess to be "pro-family" often have views that I personally don't find family, child, or woman-friendly at all.

I'd really like to know Obama's opinions on bfing and NIP.

In my dream world, I'd vote for Kucinich, and he'd win, btw.

But in the meantime, I'm actually starting to favor Obama over Clinton. Who knows.

Glad this topic was bumped up though...keep talking. And if anyone knows anything about Obama being breastfeeding friendly, let us know!

I don't know Obama's specific views but he did grow up in Hawaii where the culture is very pro-breastfeeding. Asian culture (most of HI) in general is far more baby/breastfeeding friendly. Plus most people are showing as much skin as they can because it is so #$)#*@ hot (the outside temp not the skin - edited) . And he lived in Indonesia for 4 years, where breastfeeding, baby wearing, etc. is far more normal.

That said, Hillary made sure one of her workers could bring her baby with her to work when she was first lady.

It would be nice to have an answer to their views.

I am voting for Ron Paul!! Not because of "Women issues" because support many of the other issues I find are really important. The big one is pro state rights and the constitution. I look at it this way, we all have a better chance of getting state breastfeeding laws passed over the Feds.

Ummmm, They are the SAME person!! He is an incredible hypocrite-he painted himslef as a progressive to be elected in Mass, and reversed his statements on almost everything to be acceptable to religious consevatives.
But he was never BF friendly.

Hmmm, I have a friend who worked with Michelle Obama and she has two little girls-I could ask if she knows anything about Obama and BF friendly policies.

I Kucinich-and is says a lot to me that he encouraged his delegates to pick Obama as a second choice in the caucuses.
