The intense arrival of Ian Jackson

I VBAC-ed my 10 lbs baby boy, Ian, into the world on December 31. I woke that morning, did my Hypnobabies birth visualization CD, was kind of uncomfortable with cramps and was getting ready for my OB appointment. I thought perhaps I had a slow leak of amniotic fluid. At around 11-ish, contractions started. At first they weren't too intense. Then it was clear that my water broke. We called my Mom to come pick up my girls and I was all set to labor at home for a while before we went in to the hospital. I called my OB to let her know that I wouldn't be in for my appointment. She said to go in to the hospital right away. I was having minute long contractions every 3 minutes.

I was not happy to go in, but we did. We arrived at the hospital at maybe 1:30-ish. I was still contracting every 3 minutes and they were getting increasingly painful. I was trying Hypnobabies, but did not find it at all helpful in dealing with the pain.

The nurse who checked me in said was a fingertip dilated, but she massaged some scar tissue and I popped up to 2 cm. She was supposed to leave at 3, but decided to stay until 7 and stay with us. Turns out she is a UC-er herself and I think was happy to help someone who wanted a natural VBAC. She was amazing! She helped me have the natural birth experience I wanted. She never left my side once we were admitted.

Long story short, I went from a fingertip dilated to 10 cm in about 3 hours. The labor was crazy intense. I screamed through every contraction to let the energy out. All I could do was lay on the bed. The contractions wrapped around my hips to my back and were so freaking painful, nothing helped mitigate the pain.

After about 2 hours of pushing, my baby boy was born. We thought he was so small because we're used to looking at almost 3 year old every day, but he was 10 lbs even.

As far as hospital births go, it was great. No interventions, other than monitoring because he was a VBAC and I consented to it because the pain was so crazy, I was worried about rupture. My nurse, and my husband were amazing. They were supportive and seemed to know what I needed without me having to tell them. We went home less than 24 hours after he was born. He is nursing well and my milk is coming in.

Amazing! VBACS aren't "allowed" in my area so I love reading about hospitals that support them. You did awesome - I screamed too while going from 4 to 10 in less than 90 minutes Congrats!

omg rock on. congrats! that sounds great. intense for sure but what an awesome-sounding hospital. you don't see such vbac support very often!

also hypnobabies didn't help me much with the pain either. it helped me relax if i really concentrated on it at least.
