Appropriate Tweenie Clothing?

I don't know what words I need to search for this so I've come up with nothing.

Is there a store / etsy shop / ebay somewhere that has clothing devoted to appropriate fashion for tweens? my dd is 7 but she wears a 10. When we look at the most popular store amongst her peers (Limited Too), it's so trashy! I don't want her showing belly or wearing skin tight shirts with way-too-short skirts.

I've made her wrap around skirts from AB fabric. And she loooves that. I'm thinking about making her a dress from Echino fabric. But they do take a long time to make.

If there's a store out there for girls (and reasonable prices, meaning not $90 for a dress), then I'm all for it.

TIA

You might look at Old Navy and Gap Kids. GK is moderately expensive, but they do have great clearance prices.

I like that Old Navy's "kids" selection mimics most of the adult clothes, so that should work for her. Hollister stuff also runs REALLY small, IME, and the last time we went into Aeropostale, they said they were carrying super small sizes too -- like they thought my five year old could fit into some of them. I don't think they were quite that small, but yeah.

Abercrombie also has a kids' line that looks a lot like the teen/adult line . . . it's expensive but not $90 a dress . . . at least not the last time I was there.

Land's end generally has basic choices. I also love to thrift store shop. She can come up with a style of her own that not so trashy.

I second the thrift store recommendation!

Also, hanna andersson! We love love love their clothes, and it's all pretty and modest and incredibly well made. Seriously, one of their dresses has lasted, handed down through three girls, one of whom is tougher on clothes than any kid I've ever known, and it still looks great. Their stuff is on the moderate to expensive side (if you're a cheapskate like me)

My dd1 is the same age and the same size. Land's End overstocks (check the coupon sites for free shipping), the Hanna Anderson sales (2x/year), Target sometimes. And lots of great stuff from the thrift store.

Really fun, cute stuff that suits her active playing style.

My daughter is ten and she's pretty picky about her clothes -- no glitz, no visible logos, nothing too short. Just about everything in her closet is from Old Navy and Gap Kids. She has a few things from Jacob Jr. (I'm not sure but they may only be in Canada.) and H&M.

justice for girls ( : at the name )
crazy 8 (the lower priced gymboree line)
pumpkin patch
old navy
gap kids
that's where my 11 year old sister finds a lot of stuff

thinsg start getting tricky at the size 10 range . .thats about the time you size out of gymboree and their upper sizes rarely make it to the clearance rack anyway.

We do most of our shopping at old navy (they have a few more basics available online only) we do really well with gap stuff too. It is a little more expensive but the quality and fit is great (stuff actually fits!!! The stuf at Target this season is actually pretty good. Shirts we usually go a size up and layer. and always make suer we can throw a sweeater or hoodie on over it. if it is too short or low cut we throw a tank top or t-shirt under it and that usually provides a clingy longer/higher layer for coverage.

don't bother trying to find dresses in that size. there is nothing out there short of formal/sunday best. the best you are going to do is skirt/shirt.

and i know these are expensive options (for me anyway) but we have never bnought them new so usually pay $1-$2 a peice for them. Tommy Hillfigger and Polo both fit my curvier dd really well and Limited 2 pants. we also manage to find some oddly modest limited too stuff. but like I said . .we have pretty good luck finding it used (on the clearance rack at once upon a child even ). As a general rule we just keep looking and looking until we find stuff that works. we try to stick with Jeans and basic tops for every day so that everything can mix and match. chuch clothes are a little harder.

Target has some pretty cute clothes for kids IMO. My SDD Shops mostly at American Eagle, and they also have cute clothes.

Mini-Boden has really cute, well made, and age appropriate kids clothes.

I love Lands End. Also LLBean. SierraTradingPost has good prices, but the selection is hit and miss.

I also will occasionally splurge and buy things from HannaAndersson.

Jiffyshirts.com has good basic cheap shirts.

Most of the jeans I buy my 10 yo. dd are boys' jeans--that's the only way I can find jeans that don't have sequins or glitter, words on the butt, etc. Boys' jeans also seem to be thicker. I also buy other plain basics--T-shirts, hoodies, etc. in the boys' section for her. (She hates pink, so that's ok with her.)

thanks for all of your posts, mamas!

i think my struggle with dd is that she's more of a glam / funky girl. she really likes that baby phat line. but i just don't think it's appropriate. skirts too short and way too expensive.
I think i can sell her on mini boden.

and lilyka is right. size 10 is that tricky size.

love hearing more ideas.

I wanted to second hanna Andersson! I grew up wearing hannas, and I'm now 28 and STILL wear them - I still fit into the biggest kids' size!
Because they're on the pricey side, I usually buy hannas on eBay. When searching on eBay, make sure to search for "hanna andersson" AND "hanna anderson." it has two S's but a lot of people don't realize that and just spell it with one, thus, there are lots more hanna auctions on eBay than most people are aware of.

Hanna Andersson has a sale going on right now. They almost always have the larger sizes left, even at the end of a sale. The middle sizes go quickly.
