A Mending Question

I bought a used Hanna Andersson playdress set for my daughter and the seller had disclosed there was a run in the fabric of the very soft cotton biker shorts that go with it. I don't think there is actually any spandex in them--they're just a biker style/cut. And yes, there is a run there. It is maybe 3 or 4 inches long, and not noticeable with the dress over them.

But I don't want it to run any more. Is there anything I can do? I was thinking about how (back when I used to wear them) I can stop a run in nylons, at least temporarily, with some clear nail polish. I thought about doing this with the run, but figured I'd talk to some expert type ladies here on this board before I did anything.

Thanks for advice!

What I've done before with runs in knit fabrics is to mend by using a very narrow zig-zag stitch. I try to match the fabric color to the thread color to minimize the appearance, but that's tough to do with patterns.

I maybe should have mentioned that I don't have any sewing abilities beyond putting buttons back on. But your advice gives me something to talk to a professional seamstress about. Thanks!

if you can do a button you can do a satin stitch http://primrosedesign.blogspot.com/2...in-stitch.html

You couls stitch it. If your just looking to prevent it from runnibg further. You can put a few drops of fray check where the run would continue.

It is actually possible to find where the "running" thread loop is and pull/stitch it back up along the run so that the run disappears. (This only works if the run is only one or two threads wide) It often takes a magnifying glass and lots of patience, but I've done it on stuff I really liked.
