Films with gods/goddesses/mythology?

Dd is very much into myths, particularly Greek/Roman. She has seen Jason and the Argonauts and most recently, Troy. Any other suggestions for her? She's 9.

I ff'd the rape-like scene b/t Achilles and Briseis so please, not too many movies that combine sex and violence in one scene. That is my limit.

Ooo... Clash of the Titans! A little cheesy, yes, but great fun...

The old Sinbad movies might be pretty cool. I loved those when I was a kid. And in searching for more Jim Henson Labyrinth style stuff, I found he had a series of Greek Mythology shows. Those looked pretty cool.

Oh God I was nearly obsessed with Clash of the Titans as a child! I haven't seen it in ages, but now I should go find it to watch again. My mom was so wierded out by my interest in it lol.

Thanks, ladies! DH is downloading Clash of the Titans for her and I've got him looking for some Ray Harryhausen movies like the Sinbad series. DD really liked his Jason and the Argonauts.

Hmm! The only one that springs to mind is Disney's Hercules, but not if you're wanting a) a good movie or b) an accurate description of the gods, goddesses and events of Greek myth. I did really love 'I Won't Say (I'm In Love)', one of the songs, though, and the love story has a little more pep than the Disney average.

Oh, and there's that Greek myth-type Fantasia sequence, speaking of Disney (apologies if you're anti-Disney, I just can't think of many kid-friendly mythology-type films). I loved it when I was 9, but I'm not sure if the average 9-year-old would or not. She might enjoy recognising some of the characters and critters, though.

ooooh I have that, Shaina. I'll drag it out tonight and watch it with her. Last night we watched The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and talked about how every culture/people have similar myths, just slightly changed. She has seen a Harryhausen film before (mentioned above) and likes his stuff.

We also watched part of a PBS miniseries on the search for Helen of Troy.

DD has loads of mythology books so we are looking for movies now.

Cool. I'll get DH to look for that.

We watched Clash of the Titans last night. DD was so hilarious...she ranted, "Perseus is the WORST hero I've ever seen! He's lost his magic helmet, keeps dropping his sword, screwed up his shield, keeps falling off of Pegasus and drops Medusa's head TWICE!"

Then she commented on how the movie is named "Clash of the Titans" but the Titans aren't even in it. I never noticed that before.

But seriously, we enjoyed watching it. It's been YEARS since I'd seen Harry Hamlin look so young and pouty. LOL

Don't forget the old '50s version of Ulysses -- I loved that movie.

And of course there's Xanadu, if you want the skinny on the Muses.

There's a whole raft of Italian "sword and sandal" epics, many of which involve guest appearances by the gods, or episodes from mythology.

OMG Xanadu! Geez, it's been forever. I should go look on youtube for a clip or something.
