Your favorite newborn pattern

I didn't start CDing our son until he was like 4 months old and he was a really big kid to start, so I'm sure I started with medium dipes. While I still expect at least a 8-9lb baby, I've never CDed one so small. I do prefer pockets over fitted's, but patterns can be altered so that doesn't really matter.
Do you have a favorite newborn pattern (free is great!)?
Any nb suggestions?
Favorite kind of nb dipe and why? Any reason prefolds would be easier? I do like them, I just worry about poop leaks without elastic around the legs since we bf
Am I going to have issues with the umbilical cord and aplix/snap dipes?

I LOVE the fattcakes pattern, and it can be made into basically anything (although as a pocket or fitted is most popular) It runs more like a nb/s, so it's one of those that will fit for a long long time. I also like the darlingdiaper free nb pattern...but you have to serge that one (I did add a seam allowance and it turned out turned&topstitched ok)
I prefer fitteds over prefolds 10 to 1. Mostly because they are cuter.
And from what I've researched, the scoop isn't a big deal as most babies' stump falls off within two weeks. But the dd pattern does have a snap down.

There is another thread currently with the same topic. I like the Very Baby pattern and also diaperkits.com

Darling Diapers has a free pattern here:

I have no financial interest in this pattern. . . and it's FREE! I've just started using it, but it's a nice size. It doesn't come with instructions, though.

I've heard good things about the fattycakes pattern fitting a wide range of babies.

Just putting my 2 cents in... I used the small sized prefolds with my son and found they worked pretty well...although you do get some leg blow outs with those BF poops. Just have a few extra covers so you can put them in the wash when that happens. I also had a few newborn pockets, but did not have luck with them. I LOVE pockets now with my 1 year old. They go on quick which is important with an on the move big boy...however he was such a heavy wetter as a newborn that the pockets just did not cut it. They were always leaking and I would have to change is clothes so many times a day. A prefold or fitted with a cover kind of gives a second layer of protection that seems to allow less leaks.

So anyway...with my next I will be using prefolds or fitteds with a cover in the beginning and then switching to pockets once they are out of the newborn stage.

I would make RRP's (see my siggy). They are OS pocket fitted diapers and you can fold down the front to make them fit newborns. You can make them with fleece outers and they are water resistant (not good for long naps, but fine if you change them often). You use a pin so they fit great. The best part is they might fit through PTing (they did in my case) so they are a great investment in time and money. They cost almost nothing to make and you can stuff them with anything. They take maybe 15 minutes to sew up once you get them down.

My problem is pinning them. I tried pinning one on DS a while ago with one pin like in the pic, but it was way too thick to pin through and the sides of the front would droop. Any hints?

Do you have high quality Dritz pins? They go through flannel like BUTTER. It really makes a difference in what type of pin you use. Also running the pin through your hair or in a bar of soap will make it slid in easily (the hair thing really works, even when your hair is clean, go figure!).

Also, do you fold the front small wings in toward the front before pulling forward the back wings and pinning? If you do that you end up pinning through the back and front wings and you should get no wing droop.

Let me know if that helps. Basically you are only pinning through 8-10 layers of flannel which sounds like a lot, but with a good pin it should be really easy. You can also make the outers of fabric that a snappi can grab (fleece, sherpa, etc.) and then you can skip the pin!

I made the RRP's for a friend's daughter and she emailed me to tell me that she loves them. I would love to see a picture of one on a newborn.
