From Blogspot to WordPress

Has anyone converted their blogs across from Blogger to Word Press? Was it really difficult?

When I first started my blog my instinct told me to go with WP but it was really intimidating and I was a newbie. Now I see that WP is really where I want to be.

Any tips or hints?

I have not done it, personally. Awhile back I had a blogspot blog (in 03) then went to MT and to WP but did not take my blogspot stuff with me.

I do know people who have, however, so it is possible.

I moved my Blogspot blog to WordPress (the free WP) a year ago. It was quite easy. Not perfection, but what was lost or confused can stay that way. Good luck.

How did you do it, though? I mean, did you have to copy & paste every post, I can't imagine what a headache that would be.

Is there a conversion or something?

Completely rapt with attention here.

I know there is a conversion but it still looks really tricky... I'd love to hear about peoples experience with it. I'm a bit intimidated by the whole thing and am leaning toward not doing it!

Thanks for the responses so far.

I'm sorry I abandoned this thread.

Make sure your blog is a "New" Blogger blog. (Basically, if you log in using your Google account info, I think you're upgraded.)

Create an account at WordPress.com and log in.
Go to your dashboard.
Click "Manage"
Select "Import"
Select "Blogger"
Click "Authorize"

Log into your Blogger/Google account.
Click "Grant Access"
After it loads and finds your Blogger blog(s), select the blog you want to import by clicking "Import".

My conversion wasn't flawless. I lost some comments and some comments duplicated themselves. But the bulk of it is there. I didn't delete my Blogspot blog. I put a redirect in the code so anyone finding the blogspot blog would be immediately forwarded to the WordPress.com blog.

Blogger should tell you how many posts your blogspot blog has. WordPress will tell you how many posts imported at the end of the process.

I hope this is helpful.

Thanks so so much. I can't wait to do it now!

worked like a charm for me. lost some comments. I can live with that.

why couldn't wordpress be this clear with their instructions?

I'm glad it worked for you. I like the FAQ on Wordpress much more than on Blogger. It's nice to be able to easily move things between blogs if I accidently post something on the wrong one.

I'm gonna love you in a minute, when this works. thanks so much.

Blogger is better for changing your template and tracking your stats. Once you get used to that, WordPress is great. It's like sitting at the grown-up table.

I did this last summer and didn't lose any posts. The only thing was that the names on the comments didn't show up after the import but that was not a big deal.

Use the WordPress forums, they usually answer any questions you might have. Most of the time, someone else has already asked the question and there will be a multitude of suggestions.

Why'd you move?

I moved because I wanted to be able to password protect some of my posts. I post pictures, home movies and more sensitive or identifying posts under password.

Also, after Blogger was snatched up by Google, I couldn't be logged into my Blogger account and my personal (non-blog) Gmail at the same time. That was a pain in the neck.

I think they're both fine services, and Blogger does have advantages over WordPress.com. But the password protection and email options were enough to win me over.

Thanks so much. Mine transferred like a dream. I'm just getting used to the new format but I really like how much cleaner WordPress is. Hopefully I'll get a better banner up after the weekend. - Until then, I'm not quite happy with the look.

Mostly because I prefer the simplicity of WordPress but also 'cos DP said it's better...

I found the new Blogger/Google thing to be annoying for reasons Chelle already stated. I resented having to log in and out each time I wanted to do admin or leave a comment on another blog with another name.

Also, I just think WordPress is easier to manage and looks more professional. Mind you, I'm on my own domain and built my site from scratch, I'm not on the WP template thing.
