I haven't read it yet, but it's suppose to be great. The Teacher's Union has apparently started a letter writing campaign against the article, though! Please, please, please go buy a copy of the magazine (it's the September issue) and write a letter to Harper's to let them know that the HSIng community is just as strong as the Teacher's Union!

Hey cool! Thanks for the heads-up! I'll definitely be going out to buy that issue (I like Harper's anyway,) and I'll report back.

Yes, it is the Sept. 2003 of Harper's Magazine. The is a discussion going on the "learning at school" forum. The article is written by John Taylor Gatto. It isn't exactly pro-homeschool as much as anti-public school (am I the only one who thinks there is a difference?) but it is definitely food for thought.

I always got the impression from John Taylor Gatto that he believes that true learning and believe in self does not happen well or sometimes at all in institutions, especially under compulsion. Which in my mind is an argument for homeschooling, especially unschooling.

Bestjob, no you aren't the only one who thinks there is a difference. I went to a private school (a Waldorf school), was miserable there, and I have several "excellent" private schools to choose from here for my children. We could even afford them if I were to go back to work. But I am not homeschooling just as an alternative to the local public school. I am homeschooling because I love it and for many other positive reasons. As well as for the reason that I think most schools just don't work. Sorry, that was a bit T.

I do like John Taylor Gatto though, and I am impressed that Harper's has an article by him. I will look for it.
