Post-partum pads

This may be old news to most of you, but there are many first-timers here, so I thought I'd pass on this little tidbit for those of us still waiting to give birth.

disclaimer: I know many of you are using mama cloth. I truly admire your dedication. Unfortunately, I know it's beyond me in the pp period, so I use 'sposie pads. I know they are not very enviro-friendly, : but they are post-partum perineum friendly. I have no idea if the "ingredients" will harm mama cloth.

I made up a few (5 - 8 maybe?) of these pads before my dd was born 4 years ago, and they were HEAVEN. They really helped ease pp pain and swelling. I used them for the first few days, alternating between these and regular/non-doctored pads. I think I'll make more like 12 this time.

You need:
-overnight maxi pads
-witch hazel
-lavender oil
-water
-tin foil

Unwrap each pad, and pour a little witch hazel, a little water, and 3-4 drops of lavender on each pad. You want the pad damp, but not soaked. Wrap each pad in tin foil and stick them in the freezer. Be sure to warn your family about them so they don't get a surprise while hunting for something to make for dinner. You can also add a little bit of aloe vera gel (this is an edible liquid, not a topical ointment. Lily of the Desert is a popular brand. You can find it in any health food store). You can find witch hazel in any store with a pharmacy department - I found it with the first aid items. Lavendar essential oil can be purchased anywhere you can buy essential oils. I found some in the health food section of my local grocery store and a regular health food store. Witch hazel and lavender are natural astringents, so they'll help reduce swelling, and the aloe and the cold are very soothing.

Can one find witch hazel at a regular type drugstore like CVS? I'm guessing lavender oil is going to have to come from a herbal type store.

Here are the post partum tips Ive compiled

- Make frozen pads for your perineal area. You can take a peribottle and use it to squirt witch hazel on maxi pads. Then you can put them in the freezer on a cookie sheet to freeze. Drape them over a rolling pin so that they arent board straight when you use them. You can also use the large makeup removal cotton pads and soak and freeze them. Instead of witch hazel you can use a strong comfrey tea decoction.. or sitz bath herbs. (inhishands.net has great sitz bath herbs) Witch hazel is going to help with bruising or inflamation. Its an astringent/antiseptic. The herbs will help with healing and soothing. If you have sutures dont use comfrey immediately as it will break down the sutures.

- Fill your peri bottle with comfrey tea or sitz bath herb tea. You can also use camomile tea or a 50/50 water witch hazel mixture. You can also use the tea bags as compresses, warm or cold. Witch hazel is going to help with bruising or inflamation. Its an astringent/antiseptic. The herbs will help with healing and soothing. If you have sutures dont use comfrey immediately as it will break down the sutures.

- Fill an un lubricated condom with dawn dish detergent and tie the end off. Put it in the freezer. It will make a nice pliable gel pack you can cover with gauze or a piece of flannel and place on top of your pad. You can optionally do the same thing with 3 parts water, 1 part alcohol (increase the alcohol if you want it slushier). Make sure to put a second condom on if you use alcohol. It would not be fun if it broke.

- Try using heat on your perineum too. It helps return blood to the area and speed healing. You can buy toe warmer chemical heat packs. They get up to a much more gentle temp then the hand warmer ones. You can also make rice packs by placing rice in a ziplock and placing it in the microwave for 30 seconds (leave the ziplock open till warm) close and shape the pack into a pad shape and wrap in gauze or flannel. You can also freeze these or make bigger ones for your breasts since they will mold to the shape so well.

- Air and natural maxi pads. Try to stay away from the pads with fragrance and deodorants. Seventh Generation makes a good all natural pad that actually breathes with wings in an overnight size.. If you do use other brands consider giving yourself some time every day to "air".

- Go ahead and take a stool softener after birth. Make sure to drink lotsa water for breastfeeding and to minimize constipation. Also, as good as that cheeseburger or pizza might sound.. seriously consider something with more fiber that will be gentle going out

- Think about using lanolin on your perineal area if you experienced tearing. It can serve dual duty and be used on your nipples to minimize soreness.

-Make a list of helpful things people can do when they visit. Nothing sucks worse then having your mother in law looking for something to do, so she washes the only shirt that fits you still and dries it on high, shrinking it. Include specific instructions where needed.

-Consider putting atleast 3-5 days of healthy meals in the freezer or arrange for people to bring you meals.

great info everyone - thank you!

just a quick question - can someone tell me about how to use disposable newborn diapers as a pad? Do you freeze them? Or are they just used for soaking up the defrosting pad? I think I remember something about wrapping up ice and cutting a small slit and the top layer of the diaper and sliding it in there... Was witch hazel used at all? ACK -total placenta brain I can't remember - HELP!

I've never used a diaper as a pad, but I did use them to help with the pain of breastfeeding. Dh would dampen one and microwave it for a little while until it was quite warm, and then I'd put it on my breasts just before nursing to help stimulate let down. I'd also use a dampened frozen one afterwards to help ease the pain. I reused the diapers several times. Worked great!

this made me feel ridiculous- but after ds2 my mom got me the poise underwear- like adult diapers? they were awesome- they absorbed an insane amount and I wasn't worried about leaks. trim also. i think i used them the first 2 days, then switched to normal pads. I'm taking notes on all these recommendations- good thread.

FOr the first few days I am using disposable pads. My sister gave me some that she got at the hospital I am going to make up some comfrey tea and pour that on the pads and freeze them. I also have a few of the underwears so I won't have to worry about it getting the bed all wet.

Afterwards I have some wonderful mama cloth pads from http://www.retroragswi.com/ClothMenstrualMamaPads.htm

They are sooo soft and feel great when on. I have about 9 postpartum pads and they come in awesome colors.

oooo using newborn diapers as a pad sounds like a really good idea for me lol.. I have like 2 packs worth since someone at my shower (who knows we use cloth) decided it would be cute to go ahead and buy sposies and open them and put them in a basket so that we couldnt return them grrrrr.. I think they will be getting used as pads for myself after delivery LOL

Popping in from Feb ddc, I worked in L&D and always used NB diapers for mamas. I would open the end with the tabs, fill with ice and then fold the tabs over to seal it off, then place a layer of tucks pads on top of the pad. I also have used Dermoplast spray which helps with pain. I really like the ideas of the frozen pads with lavender and witch hazel, I am going to make up some of those!

peppermint + peri bottle?

I love all the ideas. I have witch hazel, and plan to get pads plus some essential oils for both the pp pads and baby's CD wipe solution...

I am wondering if using peppermint tea or a teaspoon of some sort of peppermint body wash mixed with water would be okay for a peri-spray or something to let run over the peri area. I always love how cool and refreshed I feel after drinking peppermint tea or even using my peppermint body wash on a summer day.

I would think it'd feel nice either warmed (not as hot as tea tho!) or chilled...but would there be any reason not to use peppermint tea or peppermint body wash/soap in a small amount?

thanks!

My midwife advised me to use peppermint! So, go for it! I use a drop of Dr. Bronners Peppermint in my peri bottle and you are right it makes you feel very refreshed!

Mmm the lavender and witch hazel sounds good. I bought some witch hazel so I can try it.

Great ideas here!

I bought all the stuff to make these, but how much witch hazel? I don't want to get to too wet right?

No, definitely don't get it too wet, otherwise the pad won't be able to absorb anything. Just enough to make it a little damp.
