Hmm, I wonder if a low level tongue tie has been part of DS's problem (in addition to other issues).

My baby was born with a type 1 tongue-tie. We knew from birth because he had the classic heart-shaped tongue. The problem was that no one saw it as a problem. Some said it might be, but no one said we should go ahead and click it. One doctor went so far as to recommend against it since they stretch it out. Yeah right! He didn't gain back his birthweight until he was 5 weeks old and still had trouble gaining after that. We didn't know how much we needed to supplement. We ended up having his tongue clipped at 5 or 6 weeks by a family doc (not ours) who would do it, but he wouldn't do the whole thing. He would only do the part he could see light through. He was very misinformed, I have learnt since. The second time we had it done was by an ENT who didn't have much experience with tongue ties, and didn't give us an info on exercises to do, despite my asking. (These first two were covered by our Provincial health plan, being in Canada.) Several weeks later, I realised he had a tongue-tie again. We'd heard about Dr. Kotlow, a pediatric dentist in Albany, NY who does laser surgery and treats tongue tie as an emergency since it prevents proper breast feeding. He'll even make same day appointments. So we took the 6.5 hour drive down to find out that the tie had healed itself back together causing a lot of scar tissue. So he clipped it and found that there was also an upper lip tie, and clipped that too. There was blood because of the scar tissue. The doc had had a bit of difficulty. If our next baby has a tongue tie, no hesitation, we're going straight down to Albany and getting it clipped. Totally worth the car ride, hotel and having to pay for a procedure, though we would have here if we'd gone to a dentist.
I ended up pumping for about 8 months and giving the little guy pumped breast milk and formula, but nursing at night, and never getting my milk supply up. I've now, at 9.5 months, finally stopped giving any formula, and am back to nursing. It's just nursing and solids from here on out!
I've now found out that anemia, which I seem to have, is one cause of low milk supply, so now I have to work at fixing that!

toddler lip and/or tongue tie clip?

I know this is an older thread... but my son is 15mo old, and we've had chronic latch and nipple issues for me. Luckily he grew fine in the first several months due to oversupply on my end. We had a really horrible time when he was nearly a year old with a cut area on my nipple, bad pain, having to pump for 2 days and let my husband give a bottle of expressed milk, followed by blocked ducts which probably very nearly went into mastitis... Even my mom, who nursed all three of us in the 70s-early 80s, was asking if we should wean given all my pain. My MIL went so far as to basically inform me she thought I should be weaning.

We have done so many things trying to figure out what is going on with his oral issues. He had CST and chiropractic for misalignments he was born with, which definitely helped, but hasn't resolved everything. Low oral motor tone has been suspected due to weird stuff he does with his cheeks, even at this late stage of nursing.

Lately I've realized that he's got a lip tie, and I want to get that taken care of (he's never flared his upper lip, it's hard to brush his teeth, etc.). But I'm also starting to wonder if he might have some amount of a tongue tie that was never diagnosed, perhaps posterior. I am skeptical of how seriously even the ENTs that I have gone to will treat this, and I don't want to waste time. I'm wondering if I should see about going straight to Dr. Coryllos...?

Has anyone had their toddler's lip tie and/or posterior tongue tie clipped after they were a year old? Can it still be done in the office, or would it need to be done in a hospital? Can it be done with just local painkillers and no general anesthesia?

Thanks for any experiences and suggestions shared.
