help me identify this book on motherhood

I want to reread a book I read when first dd was a baby. It was by a famous female author and was a memoir of sorts about her life with her child. She was single mom or maybe she adopted. I cannot recall. I do recall she lived around some interesting characters, I think in California, and she went to a funky church with them and there was a lot of humor in it. Can you help me identify this book?

I remember reading a book about a single mom who was a former drug user who led a colorful life prior to having her baby boy. The boy's father wanted nothing to do with parenthood so she had to look towards her eclectic group of friends for support. I believe the mom was a writer, maybe doing resturant reviews? And her best friend ended up dying of breast cancer? I wonder if we're thinking about the same book although I can't remember the title either. Sorry!

That's the book I read. I remember her son's picture on the cover. You solved the mystery for me and, I hope, for the OP.
