Bollywood suggestions??

Can anyone suggest some good bollywood movies? I just watch Ahista Ahista last night. My other favorites are Paheli and I Have Found It (Kandukondain Kandukondain)

I did NOT like Jewel Thief, lol.

What's your favs?

My most recent fave is Guru. It follows a man through his life as he becomes a textile giant. It's fantastic and I loved the moral ambiguity of the end.

DS LOVED it and is still talking about it a year later. We saw it in the theatre and though it clocked in at 2 hrs and 45 mins it kept 6 year old DS' attention the whole time. Not one wiggle and at one point I leaned over to ask him something and he shushed me even though he can't understand Hindi!

I have a thing for Abhishek Bachchan so I especially like the movie.

IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499375/

ETA my fave two songs from the movie:

Oooh! That sounds perfect! I have three little guys and they like Bollywood, too, so that sounds just right for us!

I just found out that Eros has downloads of tons of their movies for just $2.99, you can also do live stream...

http://bod.erosentertainment.com/

It is a one time watch, but still cheaper than renting otherwise. Or you can pay $9 to download it to own.

Off to look for Guru!

Yep! The coolest thing about it was it was the first Bollywood movie to premiere in Canada. It premiered in Toronto and it was a HUGE deal. Huge red carpet and people paying crazy amounts to go.

Your son might like Paheli. Lots of dancing, good budget, well done, colorful, and fun.

Nanhe Jaisalmer looks really cute, too! I haven't seen it yet, tho...

Well, I totally love Jewel Thief so maybe I'm not your best source, but here are some of my favorites:

Among newer movies, I like
Paheli, which you've already seen -- one of my all-time faves!
Asoka
Main Hoon Na
Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam
Om Shanti Om totally filled me with delight, but it's not available to rent yet
Dil Chahta Hai
Jaan-e-Maan
Bunty aur Babli
Bluffmaster
Veer-Zaara
Lagaan
Parineeta

Among classics/older films:

Nagin (the '50s one)
Seeta aur Geeta
Umrao Jaan (original, not the Aishwarya Rai remake)
Sholay (of course)
Mahal
Guide

For masala wackiness, if you're like me and enjoy that sort of thing:

Don (the original)
Main Khiladi, Tu Anari
Amar Akbar Anthony
Qurbani
Shaan
Mr. India
Nagina (the Sridevi one)
Teesri Manzil (but if you hate Jewel Thief, you ain't gonna like this any better)

I second Lagaan and Ashoka. I didn't see the original but really enjoyed the Aishwarya Rai remake of Umrao Jaan. I really liked Faana.

Not strictly Bollywood more expat Indian movies but you can't miss Deepa Mehta's movies Fire, and Water although I thought Earth was kind of slow and not as good. I loved her movie Bollywood/Hollywood

Netflix is down for maintenance so I can't access my rental history to list the other movies. I suck at remembering the titles especially getting the spelling correct.

I'm trying to get started with these, but my local library doesn't have any. Which ones are the essential ones that I can try to get my library to order?

That's a tough question, because the style and themes of the movies are all over the map! What's essential depends on what you're looking for, you know?

If you want kind of touchstone movies, I guess those would be Sholay, Mughal-e-Azam, the most recent Devdas (with Shahrukh and Aishwarya), Mother India, and Dilwale Dulhania le Jayenge. Those are probably the most popular or iconic movies, although I'm not sure that they are the BEST. Well, Sholay is amazing, but the others are all flawed films in various ways. Pyaasa is another all-time classic, if you want to reach back to the '50s, but I found it really slow -- great songs, and some wonderful, iconic moments in there, though. Hum Aapke Hain Koun is a super-beloved film in India -- a whole generation of families have used it as a template for how to throw a wedding -- but I actively dislike it so I can't recommend that one.

If you just want to see what all the fuss is about, Lagaan is a great first movie to start with -- wonderful music, and very high production values. If you are put off by the cheesiness of many Bollywood films, Lagaan has less than most. Or if you want swoony romance and over-the-top beauty, there's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Asoka and Paheli are both WONDERFUL, but neither is all that typical of what most of the other films will be like. Asoka, in particular, really stands alone to me -- the look and feel are very different from the usual fare.

i watch loads of bollywood movies

kal ho na ho
kuch kuch hota hai
khabi alvida na kehna
akele hum akele tum(father and son)
black (mentally delayed child and her journey)
salaam namaste
Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

I liked Dhadkan too, although Akshay Kumar's character was such a spineless goody-goody that I wanted to smack him. The music was beautiful!
