morning sickness support

Anyone else battling morning sickness?

I am miserable. Having had hyperemesis with my last 2 pregnancies, I was thrilled that I started out ok with this one. The last few days it has gotten gradually worse and worse. I threw up all morning today and finally took a zofran I had left over from my m/c last spring. : I really didn't want to take it again, but I can't take care of myself, let alone my DS. I feel better now, but not great. I don't know how I'm going to manage to work this week like this. Ugh!!

Anyway- thought we should have a place to complain about morning sickness and offer support and suggestions...

Awww, i am so sorry for your pain! I know what you are going thru. I was like that for the whole pregnancy with my first. I did not want to do anything but lie in bed- just moving made me want to puke.
I wish i had more to offer you, but hang in there mama!
Have you tried ginger root and lemon tea? It makes me feel better, but i know for a while the sound or smell of certain things made me gag.
I would take a small sliver of ginger, peeled and pierced with a fork, a slice of lemon and pour hot water over it and let it steep for 5 minutes. then i would just drink it- once in a while i would put a little honey in it, but i found that i could only stomache that once in a while.
I hope that somewhat helps, but it sounds to me like you have it pretty bad...i am feeling for you!

Ginger Tonic!

Ok ladies, I want to share my recipe for a homemade ginger tonic that stops the vomiting in it's tracks! I love ginger normally, so if you can handle the flavor of ginger, you might like this. It's a miracle worker for me. I was going to puke a few minutes ago- but I got two sips of this in the urge to vomit disappeared. Here's the recipe. The amounts are all sort of approximate. If it helps at least one lady out there, I'll be happy.

Ginger Tonic
Take a hunk of fresh, unpeeled ginger root (about 3 or 4 inches long) you can cut it in small chunks, grate it, or throw it in a food processor. It doesn't matter, just get it in the smallest pieces you can.

Throw the ginger in a saucepan with about one or two cups of water. Let it start to boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer. Let it simmer until the liquid starts to look a little thick. It should be a pale yellowish color. Taste a little. When the water has a strong ginger kick to it, it's ready.

Take your jug or container (whatever you're going to use) and pour a little honey in the bottom. It depends on how sweet you like things but I find just a teaspoon or two is plenty. Also, some fresh cracked black pepper is great if your stomach can handle it. If not, omit it. Just a few grinds or shakes should do it.

Strain your hot ginger liquid into the jug and stir until the honey is dissolved and incorporated into the liquid. Some ginger pulp will get into the liquid through the strainer holes if you grated your ginger. That's fine. Do a taste test to see how strong it is. Add as much water as you feel like you need to be able to drink it. When it's ready, it should have a ginger kick but it shouldn't scorch your throat or make you cough. I added quite alot of water, probably at least 2 or 3 cups. Think of it like making juice from concentrate- you have to dilute it.

You don't have to make much- a few sips should do it every now and then. It keeps great in the fridge. Hope it helps someone!

When my SIL was pregnant I sent her a little care package of ginger tea and Sea Bands -- the wrist bands with the acupressure bumps that go on the inside of your wrist. She said they really helped. They help me on planes and also have worked when I've been hung over and moving made me feel like puking.

I don't have morning sickness yet (knock on wood) but I have the bands at the ready. They're worth a try.

But I have been taking Hydrocortisone for the last year to treat Adrenal Fatigue. And the I found a study done in the UK that steroids (hydrocortisone) cure Hyperemesis in nearly all cases. So far so good I am still on a fairly low dose, and if I start to feel nauseous, I take a little more to stop the nausea.

You might want to mention the steroid therapy to your healthcare provider and see if you can try it, so far it has been a miracle for me

Mine isn't too bad, but it's definitely affecting me. Honestly the fatigue is worse than anything. My m/s is the type that's just bad enough to make it hard for me to find something I feel comfortable eating. s to all the mamas here with really bad m/s and hypermesis, I can't imagine.

Holy smokes. This is astounding. I've had HG with 3 of my 4 pregnancies (m/c'd the only time I wasn't sick) and I believe I may suffer from Adrenal Fatigue, as well.

This is VERY interesting.

I feel you OP. It is already starting. I ended up on Zofran with the first pregnancy in order to function at all. Pregnancy #2 I was determined to avoid it so dh actually took a month off of work during the worst of it to care for ds#1 because I was completely worthless. I don't think he is going to be able to take off at all this time around and I'd really really like to avoid the meds. Thanks LCB for the ginger tonic recipe. I'll definitely give that a try.

I had HE with three of my previous pregnancies, (I have had 4 pregnancies and 4 children). I tried everything and was on several medications, nothing helped me.

I am hoping this pregnancy will be like #3 (the one without HE). With that pregnancy I was a bit nauseous but only vomited a few days. Where as with the others I vomited all day everyday for 12-14 weeks and then with my pregnancy #4 I vomited all day everyday for the entire 9 months, even vomited in labor several times.

I will be following this thread, and if I get HE, I'll be looking to this thread for emotional support. HE is so debilitating and it is hard to get help from others when you are suffering from dehydration, starvation and desperation. People around you want to help but can't.
