I tandemed IN PUBLIC for the first time ever this week. I was at the zoo so if anyone gave me trouble I'd have just told them I was a new, experimental exhibit It was still weird, but not *too* weird.
I'm also thinking about nursing my toddler in public more. Are there any reasons I shouldn't?

Go mama! I can't think of any reason not to nurse your toddler in public. Once you start it gets easier each time.

I pity the person who gripes about me NIPing my 2 yo because chances are she will delatch to see who is talking and then they will see more then they bargained for!

Strangely, one of the few times I tandem nursed in public was at the zoo. No one said anything but I'm sure it was quite a show. I did continue to NIP, one at a time, until my oldest kid was about 3.5. I actually nursed him outside in my neighborhood only a couple months ago, when another kid bit him really bad. And he's turning 5 this month.
My 2 yr. old NIP often.

I NIP my 19 month all the time, and I don't give it a second thought. Honestly, it seems like the most natural thing in the world. I say go for it!!!!!!

Go for it!

...I rarely nurse my 4.5 year old in public anymore. We'll do it in the movie theatre, or church, but not just anywhere.

It is awesome that a 2 yo would pause at a zoo! After mine start walking, they are much more interested in GOING! especially at a zoo!

What a GREAT topic. I have a 3yo who asks me to NIP all the time, mostly because his 4 mo old brother is. I have allowed him a few times. As of recently I have wanted to be more open with my brestfeeding. When ds1 was little I did it everywhere and anywhere. I even NIP on the buses and at bus stops. I didn't care. Then he got older and I thought people were uncomfortable so I TRIED to be discreet, but nothing seemed to be discreet enough for them. I mean, seriously, they seem to want me to put a tent around us while we are nursing so they and their children are not "EXPOSED" to a nursing child at a *gasp* BREAST! Sorry for that tangent, but since my episode with my SIL recently I've decided to going back to my former way of just doing what is most comfortable for me and the baby. But I was still distracting my 3yo, and really, I can't tell you why. Why shouldnt he be able to NIP as well. I think the more I deny it to him, the more he wants it just because he can't have it and there is not good reason why I should keep it from him.

So thank you for such an empowering thread. Since I've recently declaired myself as a Lactavist, I will plan on viewing nursing my kids in public as a positive and educational experience for all around us. I am a bit scared about people approaching me, but after reading some of the posts here, I think I'll be okay. DAMN THE MAN...SAVE THE MAMARY GLANDS!!!

I think as long as you are comfortable, there are no legit reasons not to.
