Z-Pak (Antibiotics) and Pregnancy

Quick question for the experienced mothers...I have been very sick with sinus infection and double ear infection (amped up the last 5 days to the ear infection as well) 34 weeks along and the dr. gave me an antibiotic perscription for Z Pak it is a class B drug. Now the question is dare I take it? I am absolutely miserable with no end in site and don't know what to do here. I am not a fan of antibiotics but not sure what else to do at this point since nothing is changing. I have taken all the homeopathic remedies I can and there just is no difference. I would be grateful for your thoughts experience on this one!

Take it. Class B is considered safe in pregnancy. It means:

Animal studies have revealed no evidence of harm to the fetus, however, there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.
Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus.

I had the same problem about a month ago and took Zithromax. It did help. Feeling miserable in pregnancy isn't going to help anyone.

Personally I would save the Z-Pak for something really really severe. can you take something more mild like amox...

Also- did you try a neti-pot...

I'm actually a fan of it since it is taken for much less time. If you have to, it's one of the better ones to take.

I had the same questions about this also as I had a sinus infection not long ago. My OB prescribed Zithromax for me and it helped me alot.. Its no fun being sick for so long! THere have been some small studies done showing its safety, though no large ones have been done.. But I have also talked to a lot of pregnant women who have taken this... I hope you feel better soon!

My MD says that using amox to treat something is like using a sniper rifle...using zithromax is like using a bazooka and that most of the time it is overkill and should be saved for times when you need it to save your life.

I am not a pharmacist (speak to yours, by the way, if you still have concerns) just a pharm tech, but I think you'll be fine. I am under the impression that zithromax is actually somewhat mild-ish, and the 5 day dosing does make things much easier. Now, if they had given you levaquin or somesuch, I'd tell you to run away from it screaming. That's powerful stuff.
