Dayton Mama's 2008 - Page 9

Hello everyone!

Hello, I’m kinda late with this post, but I’m 22 weeks pregnant with my first and in the Dayton area. I’m a patient of Dr. Horlacher(and I guess Dr. Woods), who is pretty cool so far.

However, can anyone tell me how he is as far as low-intervention births? Unfortunately, I have no support for a low intervention birth. My mom had all her kids delivered by a general surgeon, and my peers that recently had kids all say “get that epidural, girl!”.

I don’t want a heplock (I’ve been hospitalized a few times and even the dimmest of attendents can find my big ol blue veins) and I want to avoid an epidural if at all possible. I’m open to other possible pain management, but I’m just not sure what’s out there.

I read that Dr. Horlacher uses the Family Beginnings center too. Like the water birthing center? Sweet, I would love to use that if he’s the Dr. there too.

When should I talk to him about all of this? I know I’m probably late but I’m just so lost with this.

I’m getting the Bradley method book for my SO and I to read. I’m not sure if there’s a Bradley instructor in the area. I’m just a little terrified of giving birth because it can get so medicalized so quickly and I have no support except for my SO.

From what I hear about Dr. Horlacher he is one of the most natural friendly Dr.s in the area. I believe he does attend births as Family Beginnings. Talk to him sooner than later about the birth your are hoping for Yes, there are Bradley classes in the area.

Also get yourself a good doula

Dr Horlacher & Woods were my OBs for my last birth. It was a water birth and completely intervention free (no drugs, iv, heplock, AROM or constant monitoring, minimal vag exams). Dr Woods was completely hands off during the entire thing. Even during pushing/delivery he just watched. I'm the one that "caught" Luke and brought him to my chest. I suggest you talk to them about your wishes at your next appointment. They both deliver at Family Beginnings and that is definitely where you want to go for an intervention free birth. There are a few extra things that you have to do to be eligible for Family Beginnings, but if you call them they will tell you what they are. Off the top of my head you have to take a childbirth class, go on a tour, be completely low risk and have a pediatrician that will discharge the baby within 24 hours after birth.
I took Bradley classes with my first and they were great. You can find Bradley instructors here:

Thank you tenecwalker and acemama for your help! I will definitely talk to them about Family Beginnings at my next appointment.

Just one more question, where do I find a doula? How much do they cost?

Thank you guys again
I think cost varies. I haven't used a doula, because I didn't know about them with my first and I felt comfortable without one with my second, but they are generally highly recommended

Marketing Research study

If anyone is interested L2 Marketing Research in Centerville is looking for first time pregnant mothers to participate in a study, and they are having a hard time finding mothers pregnant with their first baby. It pays $50 and it is on July 11. They don't sell your name or try to sell you anything, they do research for companies for new merchandise and hold a round table discussion about it. It's an easy $50 if you qualify. I have done a few studies with them and it is quite pleasant. Their number is 435-5067.

I have an update to the breastfeeding issues we were having. Jareth has a really high arched palate. His ped was happy to hear he is still getting breastmilk in bottles. I have an appt at the Drew Center on Monday to see if they can help. Geneva mentioned massage therapy to maybe manipulate his palate. I don't know much about that or who would take Caresource. Any info? You ladies seem to be full of resources. I don't know that we'll try it because I feel weird about someone manipulation my baby's face. It sounds scary, but I could research it before ruling it out. I'm also excited to say that over the weekend I was able to pump enough to not supplement & I have my firsy little frozen stash of 10oz. I know it doesn't sound like much, but I was excited.

I just watched channel 7 and they are saying that co-sleeping was the cause of a 2 mo olds death. They didn't give any details, not really. I hate the news, I wish DH wouldn't watch it.

Really? There is a thread on the yahoo AP group about this popping up in the news recently a lot, and I believe the owner of mothering did an article about it this issue? April-May linked to it, but I'm not sure where to find it, but you should check out the thread on there.

Hi Mamagemini
I took Bradley classes in the Centerville/kettering area and loved the instructor. PM me if you want her phone number. Don't wait any longer because she was the only instructor I found and she allows about five or six couples.
I also went through the process to birth at Family Beginnings, but when I went to the hospital in labor my blood pressure was too high. They said I was high risk. So, I just went into their regular labor/delivery. My doc is Stephen Guy and he has two midwives who are trained to deliver babies.

Talk to your doc early about your desires. It sounds like you've got a good one who will do their best to follow your birth plan. Also, if you take the Bradley classes she will help you write a birth plan. She told us what we could legally refuse and how to speak to the hospital staff and so on.

like the pp said, I also got to reach down and pull my baby out and onto my chest. Wow, I wasn't expecting that, but the midwife just told me to do it. Very beautiful.

I will be PM'ing you, Shami, thanks!

My ped is in Kettering. I go to Ohio Pediatrics for my boys. I think they are at their limit for CareSource patients right now. Did you get the book of CareSource providers? It has all the addresses & phone numbers in there & is organized by County then Specialty. I believe it is on the CareSource website too, but I haven't really looked. If that doesn't work you might try the 800 # on your card. They're usually really helpful over the phone.

Vent

Can I vent for a sec?

I thought the SO was gung ho about the Bradley method—now he’s whining about it:

“Why do I have to do anything?”
“This is just going to be more money!”
“Isn’t that what the OB-GYN goes to school for?”
“All the girls I know give birth without the baby daddy [cringe] there and they are just fine!”
“I don’t have time for that—I go to work and school”

I know he has an extremely busy schedule. He works at a factory out of town and he’s starting classes full time again in 2 weeks, but I was asking him when he could make it so we can attend classes together. I even said we didn’t have to do classes, we could just read the books together and practice together. But, he totally withdrew. I explained to him the purpose of the Bradley method (for the millionth time) and that I didn’t want a birth with a lot of interventions, but he basically said that any interventions that happen would be my fault anyway.

I’ll be calling the Bradley instructor and calling around for doulas today anyway. I’ll let y’all know what happens.

He sounds a bit stressed with all that he has going on. I wonder if the thought of taking another class is just too much for him? Not trying to make excuses for him because I believe that the father should be there and as supportive and hands on as the mother wants him to be. Is it possible for you to find another support person? Maybe a mom, sister or best friend? I know it can be hard to realize that you aren't on the same page with what you want for the birth.

He does sound a bit stressed. Maybe the thought of being your only labor supporter scares him a bit, very normal for dads. It really sounds like he could benefit from a doula's services also. This would allow him to participate at his own comfort level. If you truly want a low intervention birth you need your "birth team" to be on the same page as you. Good luck
