they are proposing a study done to look at birth and dividing women into c-section or vaginal delivery by COIN TOSS!!!

Given the current research on the elevated risks of c-sections over vaginal births, i find it horribly unethical to give otherwise healthy women c-sections for a study.

Very very unethical.

And i find it said that so many women would agree to it. How society has failed women in regards to childbirth

Yikes! I really see no need for the study but that is just me. I wouldn't let someone cut me open to use me as a study patient.

That's just wrong.

Weeeeell...

Not to be a butthead, but that really isn't what the article says.

All it said is that focus groups have indicated that one in ten women would be willing to have their method of delivery decided by the equivalent of a coin toss. It then went on to speculate on how you could possibly do a randomized trial on c/s safety.

Sorry to be such a stickler, but I read through that whole thing waiting for the coin-toss thing to shock me.

You're right... but I have a hard time believing that they'll practice true informed consent for those women who are willing. KWIM?

I saw the article earlier today & I came here looking for the thread

Honestly, I thought the article was pretty positive.

In one of the last paragraphs it mentions that the proposed trial lacks the necessary support. It isn't going to happen--at least not for now.

It raised some good questions and brought out some real points--namely that doctors choose c/s for the patients for litigious reasons.

I am disappointed in the last paragraph--the speculation that c/s might reduce pelvic floor issues & urinary incontinence later in life. Just a couple of weeks ago the NY Times ran an article about pelvic floor re-education after birth. Apparently France pays for every woman to have a personal Kegel trainer after she gives birth. I bet that's more cost effective than unnecessary surgery
