BP Mania

For those of you who have Bipolar Disorder do you ever find yourself becoming manic after a very enjoyable social event? I talked to my psych. about this today (she increased my mood stabilzer) and it happens to me frequently. I don't, however, have A LOT of enjoyable social events but when I do I'm plagued with racing and psychotic thinking, elevated heart rate, sweats....basically what happens when I'm manic. It's terrible. I went to a party this past Saturday and when I came home I was so keyed up and crazy. I took a couple tylenol pms and tried to distract myself as best as could be done until I became drowsy enough to fall asleep-I woke up fine. Just curious if anyone else has this problem.

Have you considered whether or not you have social anxiety? Anxiety can cause manic like symptoms.

Just a suggestion. I'm not Bipolar, but I used to have more issues around social events, then I discovered I'm actually an introvert, and I allowed myself not to enjoy them, and that helped a lot. I think I have some social anxiety when I'm not well.

That's what I was thinking, but my head shrinker says it sounds more like mania setting in rather then social anxiety. I do have probs with anxiety as well. I have anxiety before and during enjoyable social events that may be what sets off the mania. Bummer.

I don't have bipolar (just depression w/anxiety) but when I first started Paxil (my first SSRI) I ventured uncomfortably towards mania and I did get a little crazy at a party; fed off everyone else's positive energy. It seems logical to me; an amplified version of "normal".

Sounds like you handled it well, glad you felt better in the morning. You are not alone. :-)

Social situations (& concerts/shows/loud music) can provoke manic episodes. Are you on medication? Zyprexa Zydis is an accute anti-psychotic. You might ask your psych for samples. You can take a dose as low as an 1/8 of a 5mg tablet & reap the benefits without the sleepiness of benadryl (the pm in the tylenol pm).

I've found that since my Lamictal kicked in I don't have this problem anymore. I used Zyprexa Zydis until the point I no longer spun into mania.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input, Mamas! I take a mood stabilizer (thrileptal), anti-psychotic (geodan), and an anti-depressive (celexa). Like I said, my doc increased the mood stabilizer to try and combat my too-much-fun-having mania. Interesting. I would have thought she would have increased the anti-psychotic because of the mania. This mind jazz is very complex and facinating.

Is this commonly known as just 'Zyprexa?' I was on zyprexa last year and gained A LOT of weight in a short period of time. Not fun. I was on risperdal for awhile but it caused me to lactate. Wierd. I have recently been switched to the geodan. So far, so good. No side effects which is awesome.

Zyprexa Zydis a different (new) form of Zyprexa. It is accute & you take it sublingually. Since you can take it in small doses the weight gain effect of Zyprexa doesn't happen. Unfortunately it's ridiculously expensive. Your psych should have samples. I still have some left from my sample box.

Risperadol caused me to lactate too!

I've read it can do this even in men: really weird!!

Sublingual Zyprexa can be used in combo with other anti-psychotics and as a one time thing. It doesn't have to be your normal treatment.

I'll talk to my psych about this med. Is it used when mania first sets in?

Yep. You can take it as soon as you start to feel symptoms (manic or depressive)! It's a miracle drug!

because it's sublingual, it gets into your system FAST. You could even carry it with you to a social event in case and slip one under your tongue. The results are supposed to be pretty quick.
