Do I have a mouse problem?

Every once in while, there is a dead mouse on my driveway. Just laying there like it had a heart attack or something.

Now, we have had 3 mouse-in-the-house situations in the past. One was at least seven years ago, when DH swore he saw something run up the side of the bookcase and the next morning it was dead on the carpet (another heart attack? I swear, my cat is way too old and fat to have killed it!). But the last two were more recent, both live ones discovered in the family room or kitchen. Being animal lovers, we caught them each time under a bowl and took them far away from the house. We once had the back half of a mouse on our doormat, but we think a neighborhood cat we've befriended left it as a gift.

Now, on occasion, my cat seems waaayyyy too interested in sniffing around the media cabinet, which is against an outside wall of the aforementioned family room. Plus I have occasionally heard what sounds like a scrabbling kind of noise from behind the wall that leads to our deck. There is a downspout out there and we have occasionally kicked it and seen what we thought was a chipmunk run out, plus there is a chipmunk tunnel under the brick walkway outside in that area. There are no droppings or other eveidence of mice in my house - in fact, we had a gingerbread house sitting out for two weeks with no signs of nibbling-in-the-night.

But why do mice keep dropping dead on my driveway? The driveway leads to the garage which leads to my family room, BTW.

Hmmm, well it sounds like there *are* mice afoot, but for whatever reason they aren't sticking around long. The first thing I thought of is that they are getting into something toxic, making it outside, and then, *not* making it Assuming you don't have mouse poison laying around, maybe there is something else they can get to--antifreeze, posionous plants, ect.? I guess be thankful they don't want to hang out in your house too long. I would still check the perimeter of your house for small holes or cracks. They only need about a quarter of an inch. Do you have a basement? Lots of times that is where mice enter. Best of luck!

Yes, I do have a basement, and it isn't finished and kind of creepy! It's not too cluttered, though, and I've peeked around and I haven't seen droppings or shredded paper (mice do that, right?), and as old and fat as my cat is, I'm pretty sure if we had 'em in the basement he would have given us some kind of clue (or a half-mouse present of his own!).

I'll check the perimeter more carefully - I have taken a look but not a great one. Also, we have a deck out back as I mentioned so I can't actually see the bottom of one whole outside wall.

Are they in the car? We live on a farm with a bunch of outbuildings and mice are part of life. But suddenly last year we had mouse infestation. They were everywhere and even ate my car. This winter its back to normal. But they still get in my husbands car now and then. They get in the engine because its warm or whatever. Then when he starts the car they drop out and get run over or half a mouse goes one way and half goes the other. It sounds like they may be in your walls a little and you might want to check the car just in case.

try steel wool

I heard you could prevent mice from coming into your home if you plug their holes with steel wool. good luck. do attend to this. We were infested for years, and the mice will eat thru dangerous things like wiring!!! Not to mention the disgusting dirty poo. We also had in our car(s). Luckily insurance will pay - we had a $2K clean up/reupholster bill for a car that was in the garage and seldom driven!

be carefully how you get rid of them. my DH put out some rat poison and the mouse died somewhere in our floor boards .... its been 2 months and we can still smell the rotting carcus!! not a pleasant smell at all!

Good Luck
