They can be if you want them to be.

Lesbian is generally considered to describe a woman attracted to other women. There are huge amounts of space in that definition, though. Some consider it to mean women-born-women only, some consider it women-identified-women, etc.

Queer means...well, ask anyone who identifies as queer and the answer changes. Generally, it could be summed up as "not straight and/or cisgender* and/or monogamous."

*Cisgender means "not transgender." The latin prefix "cis" means "same," the prefix "trans" means "across" or "through." </gender theory nerd moment>

My two cents...

It's kind of cute on a list serve, but not a term I ever use in real life, because...well...where I live, my family is rather ordinary. I know we live in a progressive bubble, but in my day to day life, I'm just a mom, and my daughter happens to have two of them.

I am well aware that this is a luxury of place and time, and that sooner or later, my daughter is likely to encounter discrimination about her family, and that there are many situations where it's really hard to be queer. I came out long enough ago to remember when the idea of gay men or lesbians raising children was almost unthinkable. I'm grateful to all of those who paved the way, so that my family doesn't have to be the "first" at her doctors, day care, school, neighborhood, violin class, swimming lessons, etc. etc. etc.

GAYBY!!!!!!
That's a new one for me--love it, but wouldn't call my daughter it-well, maybe. It's too funny.

I'm not bothered at all by the term. However, our kid-on-the-way spent months being referred to as "the alien baby" because my partner decided that an early fetus looks like an alien. She also gets called "the bean" for no particular reason. Now she gets to be "my daughter" a lot because we're adjusting to that term, lol. I expect the alien-baby moniker will come regularly throughout her life - especially in the teen years....

As far as queerspawn, I'd consider using it in the right context, and I would consider my daughter a member of that group. Sure she can choose to not identify or organize with that group, but she is a child of queer parents. I don't see it as any different as me identifying as the child of caucasian, middle-class northeasterners. Whether or not I like it, whether or not I choose to identify myself using those terms, I am caucasian with middle-class northeastern roots.

You know, I don't think there's anything to be ashamed of--taking a break, rejuvenating, regrouping, letting other people do the really hard work sometimes, all of that is important. And it's freakin' hard to stay focused--we haven't had very many substantial wins, IMO.

I don't have a real problem with the term, but I don't use it either. I tend to not place myself in a category but if pushed to do so most of the time I choose "lesbian" simply because that is what most people would understand.

I'll agree with you there. I am in that place right now. So sick of explaining and fighting for what I feel like should just BE. And yet if I don't fight I have to wonder about who I really am.
