Ok, so my sister in law had a baby by c-section in July due to breech presentation. They did the section 10 days before her EDD. While in the hospital, for one reason or another, the baby was given pumped breastmilk in a bottle, as well as formula. She wouldn't latch on at all, which was really frustrating for my SIL. After she left the hospital, she had to keep taking my niece back for appointments for jaundice and all kinds of stuff. She never was able to get her to latch on. So for two months straight, she pumped and exclusively gave her pumped BM in a bottle, all the while, trying to get her to latch on everyday. She did try refusing to give her the bottle and just BF her, but that didn't work. It took her a LONG time (almost a month I think) to get back up to her birth weight (which was 6lb 10oz). She saw nurses, LCs, switched pediatricians, etc., and she would just never get the hang of breastfeeding. She quit trying daily, but would try every now and then (mostly because it was so frustrating for her to be refused)
Well, fast forward to now, 6 months later. My SIL called me this morning..... my niece is now breastfeeding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She tried to latch her on last night while she was heating up a bottle of EBM... and she latched on, and fed for 30 minutes then fell asleep! Later that night, she did it again! And at 3am this morning, again!!!!!! She would even pop off, look at her mom for a second, then latch back on, like she's been doing it forever.
Now, she does work full time, like me, so she still has to pump at work, but when she's home now, she can just latch her on, instead of pumping, then giving her the bottle!!!!!!!
So the moral of the story ladies..... she was 100% dedicated to breastfeeding, and after A LOT of hassle, frustration, mastitis, tears, blood, and sweat.... 6 months of exclusively pumping.... just like that, she started nursing. She knew she would do it, her mom did it (who was my inspiration for deciding to breastfeed, as I was never exposed to it when I was younger), and just knew that was the best thing for baby, no matter how inconvenient it got to be for her. It was such an inspiring story, I had to share. Thanks for listening!!!
