Question about cervical mucus

Okay, here's the background info - I'm 22, and my DS is 10 months old. AF returned last month and has been on and off for a few weeks (which I understand is a pretty normal regulatory thing). Anyway, I decided that I'd start charting, because we want to TTC #2 sometime this year (late summer to fall) and my cycles have always been irregular, so I thought I'd start now.

AF started on December 31st. I bled pretty heavily on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (Chart Dates 2, 3, & 4), and then it leveled off on the 4th and 5th (CD 5 & 6). I had some light spotting on the 6th (CD 7), then a small amount of cloudy, sticky mucus on the 7th and 8th (CD 8 & 9).

But on the 9th and 10th (Thursday and Friday - CD 10 & 11) I had TONS of creamy mucus. I'm talking about to the point where I had to wear a pad because my panties started to feel gross (ew, TMI, I know). It's opaque and doesn't stretch very far, so I know I'm not ovulating.

Is this normal? I don't remember going through this before I got pregnant with DS (but then again, I got pregnant a couple weeks after I went off the pill, so I didn't really get a chance to chart). I just didn't realize there would be so much mucus!

Is my body still adjusting to AF's return, or will it likely stay this way? Does this improve my chances for future fertility? I've also had some unexplained pelvic pain (localized to my right side...I've had ovarian cysts before, and it kind of feels like that) - any idea what that's about?

I'm still breastfeeding, if that matters.

You'd think that, already having been through pregnancy and childbirth once, I'd know more about this stuff, but I had been on the pill for 4 years prior to conceiving DS, so I'm not very aware of my body's fertility signs (although I have read TCOYF and Dr. Shettles' sex-selection book since DS was born).

Mucus usually progresses from dry, to sticky, to creamy, to watery, to slippery-stretchy, then backwards again quickly to dry. You're usually most fertile at slipery-stretchy (like raw eggwhite) as this comes right before and during ovulation and it helps sperm stay alive.

OP, maybe you should chart temperature, mucus can be hard to read sometimes, I get lots of creamy stuff about a week before O then it gets more slippery leading up to it. You might still be anovulatory (no egg yet this cycle) and get CM signs all over the place. Temps will help.
