cooking magazine?

can anyone recommend one that leans more toward NT than the rest? im obviously avoiding "Cooking Light" and the like, but i would like to find one that has some good, usable NTish recipes, or at least some ideas that i can convert.

Bon Appetit? Gourmet? Fine Cooking?

my birthday is coming up and my mom wants to know what magazine subscription i want....

I LOVE Fine Cooking and Cooks Illustrated personally. I find that Bon Appetit and Gourmet tend to have too much travel articles for my taste, but they are still fun to read, but I find the other 2 to have much more bang for the recipe buck.

2nd everything you said. I love Cooks Illustrated. The other two are good if you're more into restaurants and travel - sometimes useful for me, but it’s not great for recipes.

oh i forgot also Saveur. its not specifically TF it is just plain great! it features foods from many different cultures around the world and emphasizes great writing.

Actually, Cooking Light is the only cooking mag I renew each year. The recipes tend to be quite whole foods based, I just add or replace fats when necessary.

I like eating well and cooks illustrated, except that they tend to be "sat. fat is bad" sort of thinking. Mostly, in every magazine, I just do what a PP said and sub. the fats/ingredients to be TF. I like that both EW and CI tend to give you the science behind things. I enjoy reading the articles (mostly, there are a few authors that bug me!).

Martha Stewart Living has really good recipes, that tend toward TF.

I don't know what your library is like, but it took me years to figure out that ours had magazines! At our library you can't check out the most recent issue but the back issues can be checked out for a week. Maybe you could look at several issues of these mags before commiting to a sub.

BTW, I like Cooks Illustrated, Fine Cooking and sometimes Martha Stewart.

I really like Fine Cooking. They have recipes for "real" food. And I haven't noticed a shyness of fat, either. I can't really use their recipes for baked goods, but then we’re grain free. Even so, I used the spices from their gingerbread cake in a recipe I had using coconut flour. It was fabulous! They have many good recipes for meat and veggies, too, of course. Even with our limited diet, I find recipes I can use.

thanks for the tips... i think im going to go with Fine Cooking or Cooks Illustrated.
and thanks for the heads up on Bon Appetit and Gourmet... i really want a cooking magazine, not a food and travel magazine. we used to travel quite a bit but those days are over for now, it would just be a tease.

Martha Stewart's magazine looks cool, too... i really love her. well, not her so much but i love the things she does with food.

Fine cooking has great recipes w/out the scoldy tone of CI. (Or the babyish fear of whole wheat.)

Huh, I suscribe to Bon Appetit, and haven't really noticed it being travel/restaurant heavy at all. There's always a page or 2 on restaurants that I flip past, and an article on food/travel that I just love reading, since they're always heavy on the food! But other than that it's recipes upon recipes, and I have endless fun with it. There are always some impossibly non-TF things but I just ignore them. Besides, I have PLENTY of cookbooks, but I really enjoy learning MORE...a whole article devoted to oysters, with big color pictures of every kind, and descriptions of how the different kinds taste, and what to do with them, for example. I felt like I was holding each oyster in my hand, and could smell and taste it! Every issue it's something different.
I really love Cooks Illustrated too. Just wish it had more photographs...I'm very visual when it comes to food!

I totally agree. I have subscribed to several of the above mentioned magazines in the past and if I was going to subscribe to one again it would be Fine Cooking. I do like some of CI's cookbooks though. I currently have a subscription to Everyday Food (by Martha Stewart) and most main dish recipes are TF or readily adapted.

ETA: I did notice the February 2008 issue of Bon Appetit in the grocery store the other day - it was called the "green issue" and they had at least one article about grass-fed and pastured meats, and I saw links to several TF friendly websites (like eatwild.com). I had already paid by the time I saw it but I think I will pick it up next time I go shopping.
