The Business of Being Born

Caught a BYOB (bring your own baby) showing at the IFC Center yesterday morning. DD was such a champ, she slept/nursed in the sling the whole time. The movie was great! I get all teary-eyed now when I see a baby come out of somebody. Anybody else gotten to see it? Showings have been really limited, but it's out on Netflix in February.

I saw the film back in September when Ricki Lake spoke at the Gentle Birth Expo here in Portland. It was such a great film! I want to buy a copy of it and show it to everyone I know. I loved the part when they show the midwife's not so graceful birth..lol It gets kind of irritating to seeing all these silent Russian waterbirths...there was something comforting about seeing other mamas who need to vocalize during birth...both of mine were far from silent

It's saved on my queue. I can't wait to see it! Mamablueberry- I love to show my students a large variety of both types in my childbirth classes because of exactly that reason. It's okay to be loud- as long as it's a productive loud. And- you never know what it is going to be like. Every labor is so different.

My midwife screened a few movies at the childbirth classes, and Aaron and I decided that the ecstatic Russian waterbirth lady from that one movie was the cheesiest, most annoying thing we'd ever seen. Then after the birth, he was describing to me what it was like for him. And he said, "Actually, you were acting kind of like that Russian chick."
I think I punched him.
Anyway, I'm dying to see Business of Being Born. I wish they would screen it in Austin. There's a huge homebirth community here.

that is so funny! and i'm glad to know i'm not the only one who thinks those russian birthing films are totally annoying!

the movie is really good, but it has its issues. it kind of felt like 2 separate movies to me. but it's really shed a lot of light on HB in the mainstream community - apparently, they were discussing HB on msnbc!

The HB community here arranged two screenings here in late November, and I got to see it. It was really good. I wondered about Rikki Lake since all I knew about her was her talk show, but she was pretty amazing, no diva stuff at all! Each screening here had a discussion following it. The screenings were in a very small theater, only 100 seating, and there was such a great response, that there is a new screening scheduled in a local movie theater next month! We are all really excited about the response, but my MW is the only HB MW in the area, and she has been overloaded with calls of women newly interested in HB! I feel bad for her because she already has a huge load. I'm hoping the interest from the film will make it possible for some new HB MWs to start working in this area. My MW needs a break!
