DD is now 10 mos and I can't really remember doing it in months!

i actually never tried to burp him!

totally off topic:
gee, there sure are a lot of wendys on mdc!
it's pretty interesting, considering the whole wendy/peter pan mom connection.

Never burped mine. They always burped on their own.

When she seemed like she was burping herself and/or my efforts were not producing anything. Maybe 4-5 mos. Both of mine were heavy spitter uppers so I probably did more burping and did it longer than most moms. I stopped burping at night when they stopped pooping at night and I no longer got up to change dipes. Current baby still spits up a bit at night but just a teeny bit and she can handle rolling her head to the side and spitting up on mattress. It is just a teeny bit now so no big deal.

Same here.

I stopped burping her when she stop being still enough to burp. It was around 4 months I think. However my Mom was still able to burp her until she was 6 months or so. My Mom had the magic touch anyway. She would just pick up my DD and DD would belch. Seriously loud adult sized belches at that.

It has been so long I honestly don't remember. Maybe around 4 months...I really don't know!

I'd say around 4 months, too. He seems to burp on his own if he needs to pretty easily, so I just slowly stopped doing it.

Thanks for the replies!

Several months ago my DH asked me if I burped our son after nursing. I said "no" and then wondered when the last time it was that I did burp him...two, maybe three months old? I guess I stopped trying when he seemed to do well enough on his own.

Then I thought, "I wonder how long I'm supposed to burp him?" Being a new mommy, I had no idea, and wondered what you all did.

I noticed there are a few Wendy's here too.

my ds was 4 months old.

He started consistently burping himself as soon as I righted him up from BF.

I think we stopped burping around six months or so. We could have done it sooner, but we did it mostly out of habit

7 months here and still burping. He will certainly burp on his own, but then you're never sure when that will happen and a spit up always follows. Best to be in control and catch the spit up if possible!

I keep waiting for him to stop spitting up, but it still keeps coming...

Huh. I honestly can't remember. Naked baby is almost 10mo now, spit up for the first time in a month () last night, and I'm sure I haven't burped him in months. Probably stopped before he started crawling (around 5.5 months).

Anyway, I stopped burping him when he stopped needing it.

Gosh, I never burped mine. I guess he never seemed to need it...

moms who never burped, were your LO breast or bottle fed?

Oh gosh, almost 9 months here and still burping. Kiddo is a spitter-upper though and always a hard one to get to burp, even when you could hear the bubbles in his belly. Burps come easily now--a few pats on the back and most of it is out. If we don't, he crawls off, shakes himself up a bit (ie, pulls himself up and plops down a few times) then out comes the burp along with a little extra. If we take ten seconds to burp him, then the food stays down better.

I have never burped DS. When he was a newborn, he would burp when I changed his position even slightly, so that worked for us. I never did it on purpose though, as he never seemed uncomfortable. I definitely got lucky with a non-gassy babe.
