i'm just wondering, as i've gotten a couple of "your message must be at least 50 characters" messages and never have before :

I have no idea, I am checking on that. Something new might have been added.

I got tagged for it too.

I was just coming to ask about this, but it wouldn't let me fill in the title box to start a new thread!

maybe it's a response to discourage power posting as well. this is, after all, a discussion forum!

I am an administrator.

Sometimes the software does weird things unexpectedly.

If the person updating the software doesn't know it is going to start doing that, so doesn't warn the staff ahead of time we certainly wouldn't be aware of it.

Honestly I mentioned a character requirement a couple years ago, so I am fully in favor of one, it was just a surprise.

unfortunatly it means when its a thread where theres nothing much you can offer other than a hug of support,m you now have to blabber your way through 50 characters to offer the hug.

That's four characters for the hug...So offer 13 hugs? Just maximize the love

A couple years ago I noticed another forum (ok it was a Harry Potter board, sue me ) requires three lines of text for posts.

I mentioned it to Cynthia as people were getting flamed for posting single smilies in too many posts.

Yes, the point of it is to reduce power posting, which, IMO isn't actually making a contribution. At what point is it excessive? How many thousands of posts does someone need to make consisting of only ":" before it is a nuisance?

Power posting isn't contributing, it is artificially inflating one's post count for no other reason than a high post count.

I was just coming here to see if anyone posted about it.

A couple things are messed up with my mdc viewing lately. I thought it was my computer acting up but now I'm sure it's on mdc's end.

sometimes someone has said everything you would have, so a : is all that really fits after that (does quoting their post count as characters?)

I could see it being excessive if you went to nearly every new thread and did it, but sometimes theres just not much to say when someone has already given great advice you agree with, or if theres a tradgedy or a day that just requires hugs of support etc.

Power posting also makes the server cry.

Its too bad though, that you can't just call out the most obvious guilty parties.

I understand.

It can be hard to threads where horrible situations have occurred as it can be so hard to find something to say. However it isn't those threads that are a concern.

There is a huge fad going on the boards with power posting and it is annoying people.

This is simply experimental. I like it, but I might be in the minority.

OK, but will this be in effect across the board? What about games, for example, where sometimes the whole point is a one word answer (and it doesn't count toward your post count anyway)? Will that be exempt, I guess?

And what about intros where sometimes you just to say "welcome" to someone?

Oohh....games

I will ask if it can be turned on and off for some forums. We might be able to do that.
