What Are You Rituals???

I'm a new mama, and I'm looking for some earthy rituals to help us celebrate as a family. We're trying to get away from the more triditional celebrations (though not completely).

Does anyone have ideas on how to start?

Thje first thing that we did was to have a naming ceremony for our DD. DH and I were there of course and we had our "tribe" with us as well as the couple that we chose to be her God/Goddess parents. It was somewhat similar to a christening or dedication ceremony but yet completely different. What it says to us and the Gods and Goddesses is that we accept the loving gift of our daughter as she was given to us to care for, we will honor her and keeep her safe, we will raise her in the ways that we promised when we asked to be given such a wondrous gift. We anounced her name to all present and amointed her with blessing oil and gave her a taste of Mead for inspiration. We then named her God/dess parents for all to know and see and entrusted them with her spiriutal and actual upbringing should anythign happen to us. IT was simple but beautiful. For DD's first birthday I made her a garland of flowers - I am saving the flowers from the garland up through her 18th birthday to give to her as a potporri in a ceremony we will have then. That is just what we have done, but as far as advice goes, I'd say sart with what your heart says, when the child is young take them out to the park or the yard and show them the things taht the Earht has given to us, the trees, flowers, grass - all of it, tell them how beautiful a gift the things of the earth are, teach the child a reverence for nature. THat is my best advice... Good Luck!

Blessings!

feasting and rituals?

I know that the sping equinox is coming up, but what are the other lesser-know holidays that you celebrate?
Oh, and I'm wondering how families are celebrating the equinox - I hear of feasting and rituals, but what feasting, and what rituals? I'm so lost! I want to start family traditions, but I don't want to just make them up. Does anyone have suggestions?

ours tend to be kitchenwitch type things. moonblood on the doors and windows, blessing the salt we use in food, that sort of thing. we really don't do Organized Ritual, tho we did dedicate our son. He was christened in the church in the afternoon with holy water and many heavy responsibilities, then blessed under the stars with champagne and told about the many joys in life. I thought that was a nice balance.

Marsy,

*blush* I feel a little wierd talking about this, but if not here, then where? heehee.

I have a ritual in which I touch a bit of menstrual blood to the windowsills, doorjambs, any opening into my house and ask that my home and those in it be kept safe. My grandma said that it lets critters know that a witch lives there, and that this home is looked after. kind of like a Neighborhood Watch sticker in your window!

It's usually not visible, maybe a tiny smudge. Didn't want you to think I was using a paintroller, great swaths of gore spread over my house.

Mamaste,

have you heard of the book Pagan Parenting. It's got beautiful ideas for easy rituals. The author is Kristen Madden.

I haven't heard of that book, I'll have to check it out! What sort of rituals do the have in there?

Circle round by starhawk is really good for kid centered ritual. It goes through all the pagan holidays and gives the dates and has stories, crafts that are simple. It is such a great resource especially if you are new and want to learn.
Hope that helps!

For the rituals it has ideas of what you can do for sabbats like choosing appropriate food and looking for nature things. Also has small guided meditations to help your child awaken it's spiritual self.

I gotta check out that circle round...sounds great.

rituals

Dearest Mothering Friends:

I know that it has been a while since anyone posted, here, but are there any initiation rituals that you know of or have seen for a young girl's menarche?

Some of our favorite rituals are native american. We use a candle & smudge with the light by holding our cupped hands close to the flame & place hands on head as symbolic of enlightenment. We also have a time in winter (storytelling cave time) where we pass a talking stick & all tell a story. Also the air/aura purification ritual of burning sage. We also ohm. o is the deepest/vibrating core, h the tongue/brain, m the lips/manifestation. We dance/yoga to celebrate, and to ground our energies. We celebrate christmas but always with a little live tree or just evergreen branches. We make some kind of food to give away every year, like this year is jalapeno jelly & champagne mustard. I have a little nativity scene that i made out of felt people that gets mixed in with rudolph the red nosed reindeer & the abominable snowman. One year we did a still life nativity scene at a park in the community-that was neat. we had donkeys & everything! We also decorate one of the trees in the yard with apple slices & pine cones smeared with peanut butter & rolled in bird seed and strings of cranberries & popcorn. x-mas dinner is always an Italian dish called al'amatriciana mostaccioli It is a marinara sauce that we serve with pasta, bread, salad. It is traditional in Italy.
We have made our own rituals based on the pagan/christian influences with our own twist. We try to incorporate something unique to us every few years. We like to do food drops on doorsteps of those in need, carolling, going to see concerts of Handel's Messiah. we also stay in our p.j.'s all day x-mas day! And that is only christmas! Every labor day we camp. Every easter we hide eggs. New years-drum. summer, swim. It is possible to give meaning to even the mundane when we are mindful.
As far as menstrual rites, I think there is a really cool poem to read for new women in the poetry & writing section. I like the moonblood markings idea!

myrhmaid,

That's my poem you're talking about!
I always hear about people smudging and it makes me so jealous- my daughter has asthma and we can't do anything with candles, smoke or incense as a family.

miriam, there was a huge thread not too long ago about first moon rituals, have you done a search through the messages?
