This is a UK site.

In the UK, the term "weaning" generally means "introducing foods other than breastmilk" as opposed to "complete cessation of breastfeeding."

I wonder though, if they mean weaning as "ending breastfeeding" or "beginning solids." I've heard starting solids refered to as the beginning of weaning, especially on British sites. It doesn't mean they stop breastfeeding though, and that would make sense with the age listed...4-6 months is pretty typical for starting solid foods.

Or in other words--what Ruthla said.

Okay that makes sense....I guess introducing solids is the beginning of weaning...

yes, weaning is usually related to solids here rather than stopping BFing .And they mention different foods to try so I think that is more than likely what the site is about.

Then it goes on to say that weaning is

When your baby stops breastfeeding and she gets all her nutrition from sources other than the breast, then she is considered to be weaned.
That doesn't sound like just starting solids.

True, but weaning is a process that can take months or years. At my old LLL meeting they would tell mothers who were getting a hard time about "weaning" from friends and family -- as long as the baby has had *something* besides breastmilk, you can honestly say, "We've started the weaning process."

For us "the weaning process" took over three years, of course. Now my son is nearly four, and "weaned", but a few months ago when he was still occasionally nursing he was "weaning".

My oldest and I have been working on weaning for just over 4 years now, since he first started solids. My youngest and I have been working on it for just over a year now (he was later to start solids and isn't quite two yet). Weaning begins when solids are introduced, which is one of the reasons why you want to take it slow and careful so as not to speed up the process.
