How long can a Kombucha Scoby last without being used?

I made a batch of kombucha few months ago. I got sidetracked and was so busy researching TF I never got around to making another batch. How can I tell if it's still good? I also have part of a container of kombucha left that was in the back of the fridge I forgot to drink. Is it still drinkable? Is it safe to use as starter for a new batch?

To see if it's still good just brew a batch. I had a scoby that was kept in the fridge for several months and it worked just fine. I had one sit on top of my fridge for just a few months and it worked, but the brew didn't taste very good and I threw it out.

I was wondering something similar. I have 3 bottles of Dave's Kombucha, unopened, that expired last July (7/07). Would these be any good now? Could I use them to start my own scooby? Or would I need fresh to do that?
