Hi there!

I'm looking for a good cooking oil that my whole family would benefit from. Dh is a very picky eater and I cannot cook with coconut oil becasue he can taste it. I cannot use any kind of buttery flavored things either such as ghee, he can taste that too I was thinking of maybe looking into palm oil? Im not sure how it tastes though. He doesnt mindme cooking with olive oil, but its pointless if its going to burn and become hydrogenated. He doesnt lik ethe flavor of animal fat either, and we cant have pork, so my list is growing sort, i have tried everythingw ith this man and its not workin! i can't cook separate dishes either because Im trying to save money and time.

anyone have an idea? im going nutes here lol.

I tried palm oil shortening recently and found it was great! I was concerned because this is an old family recipe that just. had. to. be. right. There could not be any weird tastes or I would go crazy, as this is my favorite food in the world. Anyway, the palm oil shortening was fine. I didn't notice any difference in taste at all.
What kinds of things are you wanting to cook? Maybe that will help get you some other ideas.

Where do you find palm oil shortening? I keep forgetting to check at my co-op, but I bet they have it. Or do you need to order it online?

Whole Foods carries it, as does my smaller, local natural food store.

thanks for the replies i need it to cook a veriety of things, i would use it as an everyday cooking oil. would palm oil shortening work for everything? does it have to be shortening or does it exist in just plain oil form?

Palm oil is solid at room temp but softens at a low heat just like coconut oil. It really doesn't have a flavor, and I've used in in everything from cookies to using it to fry a chicken (and once for frying donuts ). It melts really quickly as you heat up a skillet, so I don't see why you couldn't use it for everything. Spectrum Organic Vegetable Shortening in a blue tub is the palm oil I use the most frequently. I stock up whenever I see it on sale.

Have you tried refined coconut oil? That one really doesn't have much of a flavor.

AFAIK, even though it's called palm oil shortening, it's not hydrogenated. It's just palm oil, right?

I can say also that the refined coconut oil doesn't have any flavor to me and I also like the palm oil shortening.

guess what, I had palm oil this whole time! there is a "vegetable" ghee, its palm oil LOL, but this one has soybean oil in it too, and of course, its not organic . My Dh got me this ghee a while back, becasue he says its the best oil he knows of, his neighbor back home, who was Indian, used to cook with it all the time. so I found the aswer LOL. http://www.alibaba.com/catalog/10881...able_Ghee.html

see how it has a PALM right infront of the can?? i feel very dumb. But still I dont trust this, i mean in the back it doesnt say anything about hydrogenated, just saturated, but isnt soybean oil hydrogenated? Ah well, i dont plan to use this, its over a year old anyhow. Speaking of which, how long is plam oils shelf life?

In the end, I have always thought that indians and pakistani people have very very good ideas, but they have atendency of making a good thing bad kwim? for instance, they cook with clarified butter, animal fat, and palm oil, but they add alot of things that are unesecary make sense? Anyhow, dont wanna get into a rant lol. thanks fo your help!

Soybean oil isn't hydrogenated either but it has two hits against it: 1. it's soy 2. it's an unsaturated oil thus making it go rancid very very quickly.

It was probably someone's idea of finding a cheaper way - mixing an expensive oil (palm) with a cheap one (soybean) so make a product that seems ok on the surface.

Olive oil is what I use for everything, but I really like the flavor.

Hi, just be careful of red palm oil. It has a very distinctive taste. I find it is delicious over roast veg but your hubby may not like it.

I also use palm oil shortening sold in the tub at Whole Foods for high-heat cooking. I love it and it has hardly any discernible impact on the taste of food.

BUT... I really don't do much high heat cooking anymore. I use butter and olive oil (separately or in combination if I need the olive oil to stand up to heat a bit better) 95% of the time.

i use spectrum refined coconut oil when i dont want that coconutty taste... my husband does not like coconut either.

Hey sweetie! Nice to see you over here! As soon as I saw the "my husband is a picky eater" I knew who this was :

Someone mentioned Red Palm Oil....EXCELLENT. It does have a flavor though, so im careful what I cook it with. I made salmon with it and it was YUMMY! The coconut oil I have at work is EXCELLENT. My dh hates coconut. But, he will eat this oil, and even uses it to cook when he is cooking. Bariani Olive Oil is excellent. But, it does have a wonderful flavor to it.

we use grapeseed oil. i like coconut oil but it isnt the flavor that i notice, it is the mouth-feel. it is just different. good in some things, not everything. someone on the WAP page says it isnt a good choice, but i use Napa Valley Naturals and it is so unrefined it is bright GREEN. they are a good company. for raw oil, we use EVOO. and of course fresh butter in things that like that

who wouldnt like clarified butter? thats so strange to me, it is so yummy! lol. anyways i would second palm oil shortening. spectrum naturals makes one that is at many co-ops.
