Homeschool Weekly Spotlight-Jenivere

So I feel a bit guilty doing this since I haven't been actively participating in this forum the past few months but if you have questions feel free to ask them.

My children are six, four and eighteen months. We are extremely relaxed right now. We have a tumbling class for my six and four year old every monday as a physical outlet for the colder months and we go to story hour every wednesday. There is an excellent HS group 20-25 minutes from here but we've only been once because it requires me driving in a fairly busy city and I am a nervous driver.

Most of our days go something like this, get up, breakfast, cleaning, playing, nap time for toddler, stories, playing, dinner, playing, bath , stories and bedtime. When I can I throw in board games with the older two, play blocks, puppets or some other game. Sometimes we look up video's online or other resources when my kids have a question I can't answer. I like to throw in the occasional science experiment and answer whatever questions my kids throw at me. We go to the library in the evening with dad when we need to turn in books or want new ones. Most of our books are still packed from our move in March because we need bookshelves. We go to the homes of friends to play when we feel like it. A few days ago we met up with some friends and went sledding.

I'm afraid I've fallen into a bad rut these past few months. I believe a lot of un-controlled imaginative play is needed when they are this young but I have not been interacting with them enough. I need to get off my rear, do some much needed cleaning and pull out some of our new board games. Plus I really need to spice up our reading, it's been slacking as well. Maybe this spotlight is the kick in the pants I need.

Yay, a new spotlight! Nice to "meet" ya.

I think your day sounds pretty great considering you've got three wee ones. My kids have always loved the library too.

When/how did you make the decision to homeschool? Is your family supportive?

Sounds like you keep busy! And with a toddler as well! My boys like puppets too-we make popcicle stick puppets in whatever topic they are into.

How does the toddler handle reading/stories with the older ones?

I had a mixed education growing up consisting of homeschool, public, private, more homeschool then GED/HSE and Community College. My husband and I made the decision early on that we would Homeschool, it was never a debate with us. We had mostly miserable PS experiences and didn't want that for our kids. The more I've read about the public education system, how it started and how it works, the less I like it. My son is very social and would love that part but he also extremely physical and would not thrive in a place where he has to sit a lot. I want a desire to learn to be part of everyday life. I don't want him memorizing just to pass another test. I have sisters that homeschool and one that has tried many curriculums, it is through her I was introduced to a Thomas Jefferson Education, Charlotte Mason and the idea that I don't need to follow a strict lesson plan for my kids to learn. I would call my approach eclectic unschooling.

Those of my family I have talked it over with support me, we were raised in a pretty non-mainstream manner so it didn't shock them. I don't think my IL's do support us but so far they have kept their mouths mostly shut.

We have a small collection of hand, glove and finger puppets we've bought in various places. Our Puppet "monster" eats cars and hates the taste of people. I was going to find him but I can't at the moment, ran into this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx1XIm6q4r4 which always cracks me up. Ok, back to the subject...

She likes stories, sometimes she lays on her back in bed with us to listen, sometimes she sits in my lap and lately she likes to sit with her own book and talk out loud in cute toddler gibberish. Sometimes all she wants to so is take our book so we end up playing a game of distract the baby so we can finish reading.

I'm going to bump this back up because it's been a really good day and I feel like chatting about it. We slept in, had some bananas and went to story hour. Story hour was nice and I got to chat quite a bit with the other moms there. Kara (18 mo) actually sat and listened some so I didn't spend the whole time putting books back on shelves. Another mom that homeschools and I are talking about starting a small group, we just need to decide where to meet. etc. I know several SAHM moms with young children and while none are my son's age they would still be great to get together with. I have a fairly large home now but it could get a bit crazy, there are not a lot of options for indoor areas where our kids could go to play in the winter. I have a few ideas to check out including a local church that rents out their basement area to groups. I think I have some major cleaning to do and then we can start in my home and move on from there.

We came home, ate some granola and then my babe went down for a nap. Since then the oldest two have been doing maze books and my son asked me to sit down and do a number workbook with him (kumon, he loves them). He's taking a break to play but he wants me to show him how to write some new letters in his notebook. Until he is ready I plan to go do some cleaning.

Days where I don't spend a lot of time on the computer always seem so much smoother. You would think I would have learned my lesson by now.

That sounds like a really peaceful day How nice that your wee one sat for the whole story.

My Dd loves maze books too! She's always been a puzzle, maze, optical illusion girl. Do your kids like the "I Spy" books? Dd used to take nearly the whole section home from the library.

The group plans sound exciting. I think starting at your house and then moving if it's needed sounds like a good initial plan.

My son loves puzzles to and he is good at them. We've checked the eye spy books out quite a few times.

It is nice to see a family being home more often than not. That is the way we are. Do your children ever ask to go to school? Is there any interest in it? My children are pretty happy being home. My oldest once in a while will tell me that she will go to school next year. I don't mind this but my unsupportive FIL was here last time she said it

btw..do you sign up for the spotlight wk? How do you get to do it?

Before we moved in March we lived right on a bus rout and saw school buses frequently so they would often ask about riding the bus but they don't much anymore and they seem to like being schooled at home. I can tell my son is aching for more interaction with other kids so I am trying to give him that without taking us out of the home constantly.

These are my munchkins.

My son is really hyperactive the past week or so and picking at people a lot which tells me he is not getting enough attention or outside time. On top of the snow and low temps it has been windy. The first two are fine but the last is hard to dress against. There isn't much wind today, I think I'll bundle him up and send him outside for a little while.

WOW!! Your children are beautiful. I can't believe how alike they look!

What is your favorite thing about homeschooling?

What do you like the least about homeschooling?

I think having the group in your house is a great starting point. Our group has been meeting at either my house or another MDC mama's house this winter and it's been going very well. I hope not to do this forever, but until we can find a HSing friendly spot, this works.

Your days sound so cozy, and similar to our's when we manage to stay at home.

Thank you! I'm rather partial hem myself. D

I love being able to set our own schedule, stay home if we want and go out if we want. I love that if my kids need a drink, want to play, need to use the bathroom, want a snack, want a story, want to go outside then they can do it. If they want to learn about something then we learn about it. I love that they don't need to pass any tests. I love that we can sleep in because we are night owls.

Sometimes I just need a break from my kids. On those days where no one is happy, no one is nice and I just want to duct tape them to the wall well then I think i must be crazy for doing this. : Thankfully those days don't come a long frequently.

I like cozy at home days the best. I get very stressed if I am out for a long time with all three kids and no one but me.
