Nursing and pregnant

Hi ladies,

I thought this might be a spot where I wouldn't be flamed for not wanting to formula feed my babe. I'm pregnant and nursing a 10 mo, and he's been really fussy, nursing non stop and having really hard poops.

He's been trying out solids, but not eating a ton of food, and he likes to sip on our rice milk once in a while, but hated cows milk when my mil tried to give him a bottle of it. (that'll teach her)

Anyways, I hope this doesn't get moved because when I posted elsewhere I was told to just start giving my babe formula as my milk supply decreases. Isn't there any other way? I don't know why but I just don't want to use formula!

Hi there

Totally sympathize with you wanting to continue to bf while pg, and to avoid giving formula. However it is a tough situation with your ds being so young. If he's not yet getting good nutrition from solids, and he's under one year, and your milk supply is really decreasing...AND you are noticing some issues that might suggest he is hungry or dehydrated - I can see why folks might worry.

If I were in your situation I would definitely look for help from La Leche - that's where I went when I was tandem nursing and had questions. I think they will balance your son's nutritional needs fairly with your desire to continue nursing, and hopefully they will have some creative solutions for you to try.

Being pregnant and having a little nurser is hard. I've read there is nothing you can do for a decreasing milk supply if you are pregnant.

I would also recommend contacting LLL or a LC for help. You can also get the book Adventures in Tandem Nursing.

PS where was you told to start formula feeding? On MDC or another board?

It was on MDC, but I understand that they just want the best for me and my lo. I'm just really hoping to avoid formula. Maybe fortified goats milk? I am increasing his solids and just five minutes ago he drank out of a straw!!! So maybe I can buy him a straw cup and fill it with something? I sound crazy, I'm a crazy prego lady with a nursling. sigh!
