not they aren't. Lapbooking is a way to putting information into mini books etc into folders. NOtebookng tends to look more like journalling/scrapbooking.

this link shows a bit more about notebooking http://www.homehearts.com/notebooking.html

From http://www.thehomeschoolmom.com/teac...otebooking.php "Notebooks and lap books™ are closely related. Notebooking is a bit simpler, with the information inserted into simple 3-ring binders instead of put into the more elaborate lap books™. Notebooks are put together using maps, lab reports, scrapbook pages, worksheet pages, drawings, essays, timelines, and any other relevant work that your child creates. The sites below will guide you through the process of starting to notebook and give you some examples and ideas."

Brandy, Thank you for those links!

So... A Notebook is something that you work on compiling all year long and each Notebook is for a different subject but will have many topics in it (math, language arts, history, etc.), right?

And a Lapbook is generally for one topic/unit study/theme and can be done in a much shorter amount of time than a Notebook, right?

hi,
i do both & enjoy them equally. lapbooking & notebooking are different. i personally use file folders for lapbooking and i choose this route when i'm covering something that's not very prolonged (i.e. a book we read or a holiday, etc). for notebooking, i literally use a notebook (the kind with lined paper that you can rip out). we still glue and tape things on each page when notebooking, and it's lots of fun as well! the main difference in deciding what approach to use is dependent upon what the subject matter is we are studying. a notebook has lots of pages, so imo it serves well for ongoing subjects/topic. for instance, we use notebooking for science and social studies - i literally have two notebooks - one for each subject & we use them all year simply adding to it as we learn. the social studies one looks like a "passport" on the outside because we are studying continents and countries. for science, the cover has animals and plants, etc. glued to the cover, as that's the gist of science right now for my dd.

anyway - those are very much "my interpretations" of lapbooking vs. notebooking hope it helps!

Thank you, elizawill! I'm finding a lot of great information on notebooking and I'm so excited to get started with it. Both of my children are more right brained, especially my daughter -- she is highly artistic. So I really think that this would be a better way to go with them. Its totally something they would enjoy and I'm looking forward to seeing them enjoy the process.

notebooking & lappbooking are also great for portfolios (if you need that-which we do) as well as showing it off to grandparents and other family members!!! "how's school going??" - "here, take a look". the end.

i'm sure you have these sites already, but www.homeschoolshare.com has awesome templates for notebooking and lapbooking. also, you can get great unit studies there. for free lapbooking units, join the live and learn press yahoo group - they give several to you for joining (and they have a couple free ones at their site even if you don't join). www.handsofachild.com has a lapbook for free on deer right now too
