Velvet diaper cover????

My daughter will be born on December 10 (scheduled c-section) if not earlier and I have this scrap of red velvet that I would love to make into a diaper cover for her 1st Xmas. I was going to line it in PUL and something softer against the skin (flannel/ tea stain some white fleece or jsut use hemp???) but I have no idea how velvet will do.

At 2 weeks she won't sit yet so I am not worrying about it wearing our over her bottom or anything, plus how much can one actually wear a nb diaper?

My only thing is how delicate-care velvet is. Really, if she is going to wear it more than a couple times, I would think about getting a washable velvet and using that. You don't need much fabric for a nb cover, so it won't be too terribly expensive.

If you do sandwich the pul between the velvet and something else, I'd suggest using something water resistant or you'll have to wash the cover every time you change diapers (flannel or anything cotton will absorb the urine and stink). Fleece might be a good choice. I made some fleece NB covers after Altey was born (with the intention of selling alonside my tie-dye prefolds, but never got around to it) and I think fleece is ideal for a newborn cover because it's so soft and fluffy.

You might consider making a "gourmet" pocket diaper...velvet backed with PUL on the outside and microfleece on the inside. Then you can stuff it with something absorbant. But then you also have to wash after every diaper change.

Also, since velvet is such a delicate fabric, it might pair well with wool, since wool is also delicate. A lambswool would make a super soft diaper lining.
