Help, need midwife in Phuket, Thailand

Does anybody know a midwife in Thailand who would be able to assist with a home birth in Phuket, Thailand?


The hospitals have up to 90% c-section rates and women I spoke to felt violated after being forced into one even after stating for months they want a natural birth, cutting without consent, all to save the hospital time and make them more money.

I lived and worked as a midwife across the river from Thailand for a few years, in Laos. (Developed) Thailand is a sucky place to have a baby! Especially if you're a white woman. They totally apply the "blue ribbon baby" to all white women and I agree, have above a 90% c/section rate. The only way to avoid it is to come in delivering. I would advise -- find an expatriate OOH midwife. British or German or Japanese or American or whatever, it does not matter - just stay out of the hospitals.

Ahhhh how I miss the Thai beaches!

Thank you MidwifeMB, I haven't heard about the expression "blue ribbon baby", what do you mean by it?

So far I had no luck at all trying to find a midwife. I would even consider to get one over from Australia or so to fly to Phuket, if anyone knows someone who is interested.

Thank you for the links, I have these two contacts already. I already spoke to Kate a while ago, but she is not available in Phuket except for an educational class if I find more people who are interested.

I just wanted to wish you luck. I know that it is very difficult there. I have a friend who gave birth there and was forced in a c-section and they also made it impossible for her to breastfeed as well. Stay strong mama! I hope you are able to find the information you are looking for.

ETA: FWIW, my friend is 100% Thai and was born and raised in Bangkok. According to her, the struggles are across the board.

Blue Ribbon Baby is the same as another term, Precious Baby Syndrome, or in general, VIP syndrome, where a baby conceived by IVF or other reproductive technologies is assumes to be "so precious" that they get all the treatment options, whether they need it or not. That the baby is too precious to risk a vaginal birth.
Similar to when a person on the hospital board of directors gets chest pain, and ends up with a bypass operation he didn't need b/c they did tests he didn't need and he got a tiny result, and instead of waiting, they jump to the mega-surgery.

I hope that's not too convoluted to understand.

I'm not living in thailand anymore, but I do swing by from time to time. I will be in Phuket to attend a birth in June, which possibly means I might be able to help you out.
When are you due? I'd need to get some history and work out some details, and see if we fit together... but I'm very happy to help if all the logistics fall into place

Kate at DoulaBaby is great... she's the busiest doula here. But only a doula and not a midwife (yet!).

Bumps & Babies is a great group but NONE of the midwives will do OOH birth... they're too scared of it, and if the founder found out, she'd probably turn in the midwife and threaten deportation.

I'm a doula. Also a midwifery student. I attend homebirths but only as the parents UC and I doula for them. We're here long-term and I plan on doing OOH births for women after I'm trained, but shhhh, keep it quiet!!!
