Long journey for mothers milk

I saw this and rushed here to post it. It's about a deployed mother pumping and shipping her milk back home.

I'm so heartbroken to hear how long this mother has been apart from her little nursling. I so hope that they will be able to resume actually nursing once she returns home. This story is heartbreaking.

However, on the same note, I am absolutely amazingly proud of this mother for all of her hard work making this happen for her sweet son. What an awesome mother.

I agree. It's very bitter sweet. I'm really hoping they do a follow up after she's home so we can find out if she's able to nurse him or if she will continue pumping.

That is awesome of that mom!!

(and it makes me so po'd about our current military (ya know, deploying mamas only after 6 monhts PP))

my cousin is in the military and doing the same thing...she's been pumping and plans to continue doing so once she is deployed. She is just stocking up a ton in the freezer!

Great story... makes me sad that the military doesn't seem to be helping her much. The family has to cover the cost themselves of shipping the milk & cooler back and forth... wow. But that is awesome... and surely an inspiration to all the working/pumping mamas who read this!

What a wonderful story! It made me cry but in a good way. What a strong woman, I doubt that she has much support for her decision overseas.

Our LLL in Michigan was soliciting positive mail for this mom to keep her spirits up and keep her from getting discouraged. I hope there is follow up info.

Aww What a great story. I hope somebody reads this and offers to help this family with shipping costs.

thank you so much for sharing that. i have printed a copy of it to share with my two other friends who are also nursing...

now that is one helluva brave mother, and great that a publication shone a light on the importance of breastmilk

seems like the military should pay for the shipping if they are making her be there...what a great mom

What a beautiful story.

The Military does not consider breastfeeding beyond 6 mo a requirement for the baby ( I KNOW WHERE EVERYONE IS GOING TO GO ABOUT THIS..) but they do provide mom's the ability to pump as needed, should they chose to beyond the 6 mo. I believe that this thought process on the military's side is that at 6 mo many LOs are taking solids by this point...

In the Air Force, a mother can get a doctor's recommendation for a deferrment for up to a year. It's a start at least. It's just a recommendation, not an official deferrment, but most of the deployment managers will work with you. I was able to wheedle my way out of going to a two-week school until DS was almost two.

OMG Thats amazing. Beatiful, and amazing... huge kudos to her!

It is great that she's so committed to breastfeeding, but I'm very saddened by thought of this mom so far away from her baby. It seems as though mothers of such small babies should NOT be deployed in a humane society.
