Comic books?

My 4 1/2 year old found a couple of my DH's old comic books from the 70's. They are OK, but I was wondering if anyone knows of any cool, progressive comic books for little kids that maybe I can get for my DS. Thanks

My dh is an avid comic book collector and he has turned my dd onto comic books as well.

Owly was one of the first things he recommended. He says it is great. It is all pantomime (no words). Dh says the characters are sometimes sad but everything always works out well in the end.

Dh also recommends Korgi, which is a comic book about a dog and a fairy. There is also a monster. Dh says this comic is exciting, but not too scary and my dd enjoyed it very much. It also has no words.

Those were my husband's two main recommendations for something "new and cool". If your son does want superheroes and you are OK with this, dh says both Marvel and DC have lines for younger readers. The Marvel line is Marvel Adventures and dh says this has a good first introduction to Spiderman. DC has Teen Titans Go and Legion of Superheroes.

Dh also recommends current reprints of Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge and Walt Disney's Comics and Stories. These are reprints of comics from the 50s, but dh says they are fairly timeless and good for kids.

You can try Jr. Cinemanga for comic book adaptations of movies directed at kids, but dh says they are rather generic.

Some of my dd's favorite comics to read are actually collections of Peanuts and Mutts comic strips.

I am going to get a couple of those and check them out.
My Dh did buy my DS a marvel one made for kids- Superman - and it is good. DS really likes it. I think I will try some of the other you mentioned too.

Not exactly the same, but there's a graphic novel called Bumper Boy that DS has enjoyed.

Glad to help. I always ask my dh when I see a comic books question. It doesn't happen very often and dh loves to share (show off ) his extensive comic book knowledge.

Dh says for superhero titles for young readers there is also a new Shazam series out now that he thinks is pretty good. He says it might be a little old for a 4 1/2 yo, but maybe not depending on how sensitive your child is.

Probably not exactly what you're looking for, but my kids LOVE to check out the big Garfield compliation books at the library. My beginning readers like them because they only have to read a short comic strip to understand the joke (rather than reading a long story which requires a bigger time investment).
