$11.30 - Page 2

I had DD in the grocery store the other day and ended up spending 5 minutes trying to explain to her that I wasn't spending $3.99 a pound for grapes. My kids go through fruit like crazy. The cashiers look at me strangely when I buy two huge bags full of apples, but we go through that every two weeks, with only two kids!

It's okay to explain to your children the concepts of eating locally and in season. They'll get it. I promise.

We introduced the ideas to our son when he was 3. He doesn't expect to eat fresh grapes or strawberries all year long and appreciates them SO much more when they are in season. Now, at 8, he checks to see where things were grown and asks lots of questions about how things are grown when we are shopping. He is a responsible consumer.

When things are in season, we buy extra for the freezer and use them in things like smoothies and muffins during the winter. We never feel deprived. Increase your knowledge and lower your expectations. You'll be fine. Honest.

That is important. My son looks forward to seasonal fruit with such excitement.

We just have the problem not that with a very restricted diet, we really need to eat out of season this winter. To make it worse, he was reacting to everything we grew in our garden last summer so he didn't get in season vegetables then, either.

There was a news segment last week on CBS about how food prices have skyrocketed in the past month...

It is a combination of a lot of things...being the middle of January, bad crops for several produce items, and inflation.

I think they said tomatoes were at record levels ($3 a lb and such) and from this thread it sounds like grapes are sky high too.

did the fires in California wipe out some of the grapes this year? ( it supposedly did some of the avacado crops).

you can buy grapevines for around $10 a piece- they are easy to grow

I feel for you sarasprings. I understand some people will have exceptional circumstances and in those instances I am very glad there are options available. I don't want to take this thread off-topic, but I'd love to hear more about your theories about your son's sensitivities to your home-grown produce. I'm so curious about the increases in food sensitivities we're seeing. Perhaps a new thread or PM?

If CA grapes took a weather hit, you won't see the price increases until the summer when they're in season. The grapes ya'll are enjoying now are most likely from Chile and expensive because of it. Apples and citrus are your best US bets now, mainly because they handle cold storage well (harvested in the fall). Back in the day, as they say, we'd all be eating dried or canned fruit and that'd be it until spring.

Cravings are cravings when you're pregnant. We are absolutely committed to local, in-season eating and we live in Nova Scotia. That means we are eating apples, pears, cranberries and some frozen blueberries from the summer. We did buy oranges for a treat. Dd is starting to get used to it--she knows that mommy goes to the farmers' market every Saturday morning to bring home whatever's there. We eat more baked goods (local whole wheat, homemade) during the winter, since there isn't a lot of fruits for 'treats.' We bake apples with maple syrup, too.

But when I was pregnant? Never mind! If expensive grapes are the worst thing you eat during your pregnancy, you go, Mama!

Ditto. Cravings are cravings. If I were seriously needing some, I'd get them. Now strawberries, I am just itching for them to come back in season. We always buy TONS of strawberries and it's really hard waiting for them!

OP here, just thought I would say that I was in superstore today and grapes were down from the $5.99/lbs I paid last week to $1.99/lbs today. They were much nicer grapes today too. I bought a giant bag, mmmmmm....
