Bodies Revealed

My 4yo dd is fascinated by her body and what's inside, her bones, muscles, veins, ect... I was thinking of taking her to this exhibit, but didn't know if maybe it would be too much for her and end up grossing her out. So, the question is, would you take your 4 yo to see this?

I recently saw a very similar exhibit. There were no young children in there when I went. I chose not to bring my two preschool aged kids. There was a very reverent, almost spiritual feeling walking through there. People were using hushed voices, etc. That being said, I think it depends on the child. I don't think my kids would do well in a situation like that, but every child is different. My kids also are very interested in how bodies work but so far pictures in books have more than answered their questions.

We saw Bodies: The Exhibition (same as Bodies Revealed, I guess-both are listed on this site http://www.bodiestheexhibition.com/) recently. It was great, very educational, really neat thing but I don't think my kids (ages 8, 6 and 4) are quite ready for that yet. It's intense, and knowing my kids I thought the 8 and 6 year olds would find it a little creepy or scary (the 8 year old has an anxiety disorder and you never know what'll scare her; the 6 year old gets creeped out by skeletons). While I'm not sure if it would frighten my 4 year old I just don't think she'd have the patience for it. It really was a quiet, hushed, almost reverent atmosphere (with lots to read, and she'd have to be held up in order to actually see most of the displays)--I couldn't see her not being impatient and at some points disruptive. I think if it comes around again in a year or two, we'll consider taking at least the older two kids.

My kids love learning about bodies, too, and we have a book all about the body and how it works (with illustrations of all the systems). They also like to go on BrainPop, which has some great videos and explanations regarding how the body works. So far this has been enough for them in terms of satisfying their desire to learn about the body.

I don't know. I would love it but she might be disturbed seeing a real body vs seeing a representation of a body.

My 5yo LOVED Body Worlds. She was absolutely entranced and talks about it to this day even though it was about 8 months ago. I think it totally depends upon the maturity of the child. I wouldn't have taken my very young 4 yo but my mature 5 yo loved it.

We went to Bodies the Exhibition last week with my five and two year olds. There was another couple there with a baby (around the same age as my son) at the same time as us . . . both my little guy and theirs were crazy over the boobies . Both my kids learned from the exhibit, and I thought it was great.

My five year old thought it was a bit creepy and took some time to warm up to it, but once she did, she got very involved, asking questions and really looking at everything.

I would definitely say bring your child if she's interested in all that. It's a wonderful experience.

I think that when that comes to utah i might take my dd to go see that. It sounds really cool. Also at the Childrens museum i know there is a exhibit that is traving around called Sesame Street presents the human body! I am taking my dd to that as we have a membership to the museum. Maybe look in the locale kids museum and see if they are going to be hosting that and that would be a great thing to take the littler kids too i think.

Dr. Seuss has a book about anatomy for children. And I have a Scholastic Video with several stories on it. The particular one I have has the song "Dem Bones" on it. It's cute and my DD learned about the skeletal system at 2. Those would be fine introductions to the interior of the human body. Otherwise, you child might like the Bodies exhibit.....or else she might have nightmares, and you will feel guilty for giving them to her. Perhaps introduce her to pics first, so that she can be somewhat prepared for the facts.

I do think it depends on the child. My daughter (age 4.5) is fascinated by these kinds of things and she'd be really amazed by the exhibit. I can see some finding it creep though.

I just showed the website to my dd who is 5.5 and loves these sort of things, she just said 'wow I'd love to go, when can we go?' so I guess we would take her, and if she decided she didn't like it we would leave - but my first instinct was yes, she would be fascinated by it.

I'd take my 5 and 2 yr. olds if it wasn't prohibitively expensive.

I took my DD to Bodies: The Exhibit in Atlanta when she was 5. She liked it, especially the lung exhibit of a smoker - gross!! I'm asking her now and she says she didn't remember it.

I explained at the time these were actual bodies but I don't think it registered. Everything was respectfully done.

Others in my homeschool group went, taking their children under 10, and recommended it to everyone.

Only you know your child, but I'd take her if she's interested in the human body.
