best ways to heal myself down there post-birth?

With all the new mamas here, and I'm still one of the waiting ones (due 1/26), I'm wondering what have been the best things to do and/or buy to help your bottom feel better? I know baths are good, but what have you added to the water, etc. Other ideas, products you've liked to help healing?

Just trying to plan ahead, thanks!

Hi dahlsk,

Well after my babies are born I like to take baths in a "sitz bath" which I'm sure you have heard of. It is a blend of really good herbs intended to help you heal in that area of your body. I have presoaked pads in the same tea and frozen them on a cookie sheet to use afterwards also.....very soothing RIGHT after. Also my midwife has me make little burritos with the same tea in cheese cloth.

This time I got some if this http://http://www.thayers.com/store/...9c8318de64730a and I plan on using it in a perri bottle.

Also I know that lots of kegels are going to be good too.....

I know there was someone that posted some really good ideas just like last week.......

herbal baths are great... frozen pads with witch hazel feel really good.. lots of homeopathic Arnica and Traumeel (a homeopathic healing tincture) and lots of rest!

I didn't tear, but I was the most swollen my midwife had seen in years, according to her. I just used a regular ice pad and that was it. Within a couple days I felt pretty much back to normal down there. The female body is amazing...I'm awed by mine after giving birth!!!

from feb DDC but want some details on the witch hazel pads...did you just squirt witch hazel and put them on a cookie sheet? how did they not stick to it? i have an upright freezer so a cookie sheet probably wouldn't work for me. what should i do?

Remember, you won't necessarily need much. I had a second-degree tear with my first, and that afternoon (DS was born at 4 am), when the midwife came to check me, I was sitting cross-legged on the bed. She told me not to do that because it would make my perineum hurt more once the painkillers wore off, but I hadn't had any painkillers!

I think it's related to how you swell generally. I know that I was eating pretzels a day after having all four wisdom teeth removed, and when I went for a check-up at four days the surgeon said I looked like I was at least 2-weeks post surgery. So if you heal easily from normal trauma, you should be okay for birth too...

Hi
I'm from the July DDC but I lurk here to get my baby fix Congratulations to all you mamas!

Just wanted to add that you'll definitely want cold (ice packs, frozen witch hazel pads, cold water in the peribottle) at first because it brings down swelling, then after you can switch to warm (warm water in peribottle or in toilet top sitz bath if you have one) if it's comfy for you.

Also, even without actually tearing you might have abrasions, feel kinda raw so when you pee it can sting: using a peribottle to spray water while you pee and to rinse after if you feel nervous about wiping is very helpful.

best wishes for your birth!

Hello, lurking from Feb DDC. Just wondering if anyone has tried this stuff.
http://www.wellinhand.com/newmama/index.html

I have a tendency to swell something horrible after having a baby or any trauma to my perineum. It is to the point where I can not pee and have to have a catheter in for a couple days post partum until the swelling goes away. I have already talked this over with my midwife and she is going to put a cath in right after the placenta comes so I do not have to go through the pain of a swollen bottom and not being able to pee thus having a terribly distended bladder.

Anyway, if anyone has any further advice on reducing the swelling I would love to hear it!

I'm a slow healer (have been with all of my births.) I'll be 3 weeks PP this Sunday, and I'm just getting back to normal as far as swelling goes. Most of these things were already discussed in the thread, but here's my list of things I did to help:

1) Peri bottle cleanse after every trip to the bathroom. Filled half with brewed sitz bath herbs, half with warm water.

2) Herbal sitz bath in very warm tub at least once every day for at least 20 minutes.

3) Ice packs the whole first week. I like the chemical break-and-shake kind because they aren't as shockingly cold as homemade ones when they first come out of the freezer, and they hold their cold much longer. However, homemade ones are fine, too. I got mine on Overstock
I gave those a squirt of sitz bath herbs before putting them on, too.

4) Rest, rest, rest. This is perhaps the hardest because you want to be up and doing things, but you MUST give yourself time to heal.

5) Kegels. My MW has me doing them every time I nurse, and before bed, she wants me doing them upside-down. I lay with my chest on the bed, bottom in the air, and do a good slow 30 or so each night.

6) Good nutrition. Avoid sugar and processed foods. These undermine the body's ability to heal.
