OK, talk to me honestly/ brutally about a name...

DH keeps flashing on the name River. Specifically, his full name would be River Douglas Neale- DD is Skye Diane Selkie, DS2 is Isaac Linden Marwood and DS1 is Alexander David, so the names are getting weirder throughout the years. BUT let's face it, it is a die-hard hippie name. But it's growing on me.

Oh, and the name Douglas (family name, after my uncle) is gaelic for Dark River.

Be brutal. Gimme your thoughts We don't really have much of a b-plan.

I like the name River, and find it interesting that your other choice of Douglas means dark river....kind of seems like it was meant to be.

I LOVE IT.. it was on my list.. but DH vetoed it.

I like it - it's a little out there but no too much, kinda middle of the roud in terms of a hippy name.

Oh River is totally cool. Not way out there, either. Doesn't anyone remember River Phoenix?

I love it!!!

We have children with "normal" names and then #4 came along and, well, not so normal! : We have Alexander James, Zachary Thomas (my family thought the name Zachary was strange! ), Haley Elizabeth and Coren Ryu (crescent moon dragon) ... this baby will be Banyan Phoenix or Alia (or Elora) Quinn.

I love it, and I'm not usually one for non-traditional names.

I will be honest...I have known a couple of girls named River, and never thought of it for a boy till your post. But I actually really like it and think it sounds cool.
How fun to have kids: Skye and River.

I love it..
not even all *that* hippish to me!

I loved River Phoenix, number one.

Number two, you are giving him a very "normal" middle name, so if he gets tired of being different, he can just go by Doug. You're not forcing the kid to need to change his name entirely if he opts to be more mainstream.

Number three, I predict he will keep River when he realizes the sheer number of females that will gravitate towards him just because of the name.

Love the name River. And my uncles name is Douglass. Totally not a weird name for us.

I like it too and really don't think it's all that "out there" at all. I didn't get to name dd and ds, so of course they have "normal" names and I just don' sweat it about how different their little brother's name is going to be if he's a boy.

I did remember River Phoenix (and DH didn't believe me when I tried to convince him that that was his real name, until we googled the whole family...he got to Summer, and started listening) - he was my first crush in fact. I think that's possibly part of my concern, that I don't really want any of my kids to end up dead in a hollywood nightclub of an OD. Not that I want a tory-voting accountant for a child either, it's bad enough that I married one, but still...
Over here, it is pretty out there still- people are very conventional on naming their boys. Far too many Jacks and Joshuas, but I have a feeling it's going to fit this little one. The last 9 months really have been a case of "still waters run deep".

I really like River.. although not sure about in context... next to Skye, people might wonder if your other little darlings shouldn't be named Tree, and Earth Oh, and didn't you have Samson picked out at one point? That was good too..

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the name River!

Unfortunately, I had a lovebird that I named River when I was younger, so now the name is off limits to me!

I love River as well, remember too, by giving him Douglass as a middle name, he always has the option to go by that if he feels it's too "hippie". In this day and age, with Zappa having kids Dweezle and moon unit, River is completely normal.

But, Helen, you're talking to a bunch of hippies, don't cha know?
I concur, I really like it, I think it is a cool name.
