How's my "argument" for the 15-month checkup tomorrow....

Feeling somewhat invigorated by "winning" at 12 month checkup against vaxing for MMR and Varicella, I am preparing for dd and ds's 15 month check-up tomorrow... where I was told by the nurse yesterday calling to confirm than they are "due" for HiB and Prevnar...

Here goes:

HiB:
1.) Dd and ds were breastfed for a long time (still are occasionally), which significantly reduces threat of HiB.
2.) At 15 months, dd and ds are out of the "high risk" age group for those who get HiB (infants). Only 30% of cases occur after 18 mos.
3.) Dd and ds are home with me, not in daycare. Again, this means LOW risk.

=> Conclusion: I have concerns about the risks of HiB vax, which combined with the fact that dd and ds are extremely low risk for contracting it, mean we are not getting the vax.

Prevnar:
1.) Prevnar does not prevent ear infections, it just changes the cause of ear infections. So when ped says they should get it because they each got an ear infection last winter : then I should tell him hogwash.

=> Given that this vax is ineffective at preventing it's marketing "hook" (ear infections), and that it is new and therefore its risks are not well known at this time, we are not getting the vax.

Am I missing anything??? I'm trying to keep it simple... better not to get into scientific too much, since I'm not a physician and I worry about my ability to accurately talk about "the research", etc... I want to avoid detailed battle if possible, just state the main issues and move on. Ideas? Other points I should make?

Thank you.

sounds perfect to me

I think your points are quite good, but why battle at all? Just say when you check in,are taken to the exam room,or after the physical exam:There will be no vaccines today for either children so please don't draw up any.

If they give you are hard time and want to discuss/fight about the issue then just get up and leave.

If your doctor/staff is in a habit of getting an attitude over vaccines then I would wait till after the physical exam to mention it,because you don't want anyone yelling/arguing with you during that whole period. Not good for you,and never good for the children to see that sort of behavior.

I usually mention it as soon as we sign in,because they sometimes forget we don't vaccinate and say, "Oh Alex is due for x and y today."
Best wishes and do post an update!!!!

I totally agree with Sara & Hillary! Why are you even going for another appt if you were just there 3 months ago & your children are healthy? I'd just avoid the whole thing, including exposing my children to sick kids, esp. during a peak month for pertussis (not knowing if there even is any in your area). I'm sure you'd much rather spend a summer day somewhere else.

Yep, I'm with Hilary too. I just say no, no explination. If you explain it just gives them ammo to argue over.

I wouldn't go to the appointment at all unless you have specific issue you need to discuss with the Dr, or that needs monitoring.

Great ideas, all. I think less is more in this situation. I'm the kind of person who wants my ducks in a row "just in case", but I think your ideas about just saying nope are good.

MamatoBabyRoni -- my thoughts exactly!! :LOL I had a post here a month or so ago with that same question. I decided in the end to keep the appointment, because I was persuaded by several posts saying I don't want to appear to be neglectful if God forbid I were ever challenged on why my kids "missed" checkups. Plus I figured why not. The entrance/intake/waiting room is completely separate for well baby visits and you're just quickly taken back to your own private room, so I feel it's kind of low risk in terms of their catching anything.

I'll report back!!

OK, well it went a lot better than expected... that is once the snitty nurse left us alone after measuring dd and ds... Me: "Would you please tell the lab that [dd and ds] won't be getting any shots today?" Nurse [exaggerated roll of eyes]: "Well I'm SURE the doctor will want to talk to you about that. THEY [pointing at dd and ds] are already BEHIND on some shots and are DUE for others. So we'll have to see what HE says." [exits rapidly, closes door a *little* too hard] : Ahhh nursing care at its finest...

When the doctor came in I had my dukes up, but no need. He agreed Varicella was a joke, and HiB and Prevnar weren't urgent for healthy, BF'd ds and dd. He did want us to reconsider MMR "at some point" but agreed it wasn't something he'd lose sleep over if they "delayed" some more.

So... feeling much better about this now.

Thanks for advice and encouragment.

that's great that the ped was supportive. i had a supportive ped, but his nurses were total witches so i quit going.

Glad to read it went well.I too switched peds the first time due to idiot/rude staff.
Now how will the doctor react if you tell him you won't do the MMR at all? Many seem ok with delay, but once you say no they get all huffy and puffy.
Take care!
