Hi Moms,

I've written another article about historic breastfeeding with photographs. One of the photographs I've mentioned here before, but there is a great photograph that's brand new.

Hope you enjoy them!

Wow! I'd love to see that.

It just underscores how breastfeeding hadn't been tainted by the formula industry yet in rural America.

I live in rural East Tennessee and the breastfeeding rates are dismal here. So the formula industry has definitely reached this area.

That said, my granny talks about how the women used to nurse in church. She cracked me up one time. I was nursing and she said "Yeah, I can remember sitting in church (an old mountain Baptist church) and them women would flop their big old boobs out like it wasn't nothin. Some of the kids were so old that they would just come and lift their mama's shirt up. Nobody even noticed". I love my granny.

I like the photos, and looked at the other article, but the photos mentioned in that one are missing. I wish I knew why my mother in law is so squeamish about my brother in law and father in law being around while I'm nursing even though she's completely supportive otherwise. She's not quite in the generation that would've been nursed in those photos, but her father is been old enough to have been a teen and he gets embarrassed. Apparently, even her mother nursed the babies in another room while at home. Granted, her baby brother is only two years older than me, so that may have something to do with her recollection.

Awww... I remember a picture of my grandmother that looked like the auction one... Grandpa was an auctioneer after WWII and the photo is just like that, down to the newspapers on the wall! Except granny didn't wear glasses and her sister was in the pic, too. I wish I had that pic to share...
