My 3 yr old son has been using a potty for a month...successfully with no accidents (poop or pee) for about 2 weeks. He is in underpants all day long, now, even during naptime (although I do keep a kid potty in his room...just in case he really needs to go). He is dry during naps unless he wakes up and decides to use the little potty (which he does occasionally). Even for outings...he wears underpants, now. So, is it time to got to underpants at night? We've been using a sposie on him at night but I've noticed all this week that it is completely dry and he just pees first thing in the morning in the potty. So--is it time? I guess I was expecting night time diapers for a while longer. Should we wake him up in the middle of the night to use the potty? Suggestions?

It sounds like he's ready if he's waking up dry some of the time. :-)
My son is 4-1/4 and still wakes up with his goodnite soaked. We've been trying underwear this week, because he really wants to... but every night we've had to change the underwear. I wake him to go potty around 11:30 p.m. and DH does it around 3:30 a.m. and we're still missing the pee time.
DS1 is a very heavy sleeper, which I think is part of the problem.
The cute thing is he doesn't remember the accidents, so when he wakes up with his second/third pair of underwear dry, he's all proud of himself.

I'd say if he's consistently dry in the morning go for the undies! If it doesn't work out you can always go back. I try to help my girlie to the bathroom before I go to bed but she never actually goes, but you could try that. It usually makes me feel more assured if she's had an opportunity. Way to go little guy!

That sounds *exactly* like my ds.
He's almost 4.5 and has been daytime pottytrained since just before he was 2.5. But at night he is a super heavy sleeper (naptime too) and usually wakes up wet, having peed and simply slept right through it (and I've watched him do this on several occasions and it's like he's totally dead to the world). So my dh and I have recently started waking him up once or twice a night to pee where he practically sleepstands in front of the toilet and pees and then as soon as we get him back in bed he's totally asleep again. Sometimes he's already peed in his nighttime diaper (we used the "cool alert" diapers for a while but that didn't phase him either) so we do a middle of the night change (usually in his sleep). But then when he wakes up in the morning with a dry diaper, he doesn't remember being wet at night and being changed, he's just very proud of himself.
I'd say if your ds has woken up dry for a week or more, let him wear undies to bed and just put a couple of towels under the sheets just in case.

My daughter was dry at night at 2.5; must have been like your son. Go for it.
My son is almost 3 and not even close, he peed twice during his nap yesterday! Aaaaaaahhh. I don't expect there's anything to do about it as it's his physiology but the problem is (1) he fights so hard on the nap pullup that sometimes he goes down without one ... sometimes it's fine but like yesterday, he fell asleep in the car (no pullup) and peed on me as I carried him inside for his nap. So I pull off his pants, take him to the toilet, he pees some more half asleep, and he says I DON'T WANT A PULLUP, now of course he's just peed, and usually that will mean he can go without. Finishes his nap, nah, peed like crazy AGAIN before he woke up. That and the fact that his little thing works its way out of the pullup sometimes enough to let him pee the bed even wearing one. I have told him it is not his fault his bladder is too small, but he keeps saying that he is too old for one and he won't pee, he promises.

Sounds like he is ready. My dd is almost three, and has been in panties during the day for 6-8 months, she had been about a 50-50 night time dry girl. Last week I realized that it had been more than a month since she had woken up wet, but since we cosleep with her and ds....I wasn't in a hurry to take her out of her nighttime diaper
: but a couple of nights ago she asked to wear panties to bed, and of course I let her, and she is doing great. She even woke up in the middle of the night last night to go potty.

When my son went to no diapers at night, I would usually take him to the bathroom around 1am. I could tell that he needed to pee because he'd start thrashing around and yelling, like he was having a bad dream. A quick trip to the potty and he'd go right back to sleep.
He transitioned well into waking up on his own and then into taking himself to the potty at night.
He was sleeping in our room at the time, but not in our bed.

Good thread, I have been wondering the same thing. Ds will be 3 in March and been using the toilet since Oct. with only maybe a couple of accidents. He learned on his own and now is dry pretty well every morning when he wakes up. He has even, a few times woken up in the middle of the night, come into our room and told us he needs to pee. I had him in sposies overnight just to use up the last of the pack, then switched him to cloth training pants just so I could tell for sure if he was totally dry in the morning. I think I'll ask him if he wants to wear underwear to bed. Then I'll buy some mattress protectors
