GV and Thrush question

I had a wicked case of thrush and have been using GV and GSE to treat it. (GV at night, and GSE during the day, in DS mouth before feeds and on my nipples after) We've been doing the GSE for 4 days and the GV for the last 3 nights. I've definately seen a huge improvement (thank g-d!) but was wondering how long to continue the GV for? Is 3 days enough with improvement? I don't want to use it too long (my little guy is only 1 month old) but I don't want to stop too early, either (I've heard that thrush is nasty stuff and can recur easily) If we stop, I was thinking we'd continue the GSE for another week or so?

Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!!!!

Oh, and if you are or have ever suffered from thrush, big to you- it is seriously one of the worst things I've experienced!

I've heard a minimum of 3-4 days for the GV (once a day), maximum of 7 days. Stop after 3-4 if all better, if not, can continue until 7 days. I think that is from Jack Newman: http://www.drjacknewman.com/index.ph...d=47&Itemid=90

Hope that helps, and you are thrush-free soon!

Yes, thrush is nasty & like other infections, it can seem like it's going away but rear it's ugly head again after you've stopped treating it.

An LLL Leader can tell you how long to do the GV.

Have you been limiting your sugar intake? THrush feeds on sugar so that can help it to come back again. Have you taken antibiotics lately - while pregnant, or during or since having your baby? They can contribute to thrush. Priobiotics may help your system get back to normal again.

Thanks. I think I might do the GV one more night (it's so messy I can't wait to stop- though it does work, so definately worth it!) I am feeling heaps better though.
I was actually suprised to have thrush- I haven't been on antibiotics and I've never even had a vag YI in my life. I kept thinking the pain was from latching issues (even though the first 2 weeks everything was perfect) it finially got so bad I consulted a LC and we figured the thrush.
I have been limiting sugar and dairy, and also am taking probiotics (as well as giving them to DS) .
I never want to have to deal with this again! It sucks!

yes to the probiotics. you can actually rub powdered acidophilus on your nipples and then nurse (maybe you're already doing this). also, not to scare you but i had relentless thrush for 2 years. it began when my son was 6 months old and lasted in various stages of intensity until he was over two. he did breastfeed until age 5 so its not that thrush killed our nursing relationship but it did suck!
my suggestion would be to talk with your gynecologist or nurse-practitioner or whom ever and consider internal meds such as diflucan if the thrush does not diminish. for me this treatment finally got rid of the thrush once and for all.
