Who doesn't have names picked out?

With all the threads on this board about baby names, I feel a little left out cuz I don't have a good idea what this little one will be named.

Is there anyone else out there in this boat? DP and I have talked about a couple of names if it is a boy, but not in a serious, "its settled" way. And if this is a girl, well, that hasn't been discussed. DP really wants a boy.

And what are some of the reasons why you don't have a name picked out?

For me, its partially cuz DP is Indian and we want to use a name that reflects this, and I don't even know how to say some of the names I see for Hindus. And with a different culture, its really hard for me to know what names are overused and what is just plain unpopular. There is also a tradition of asking a jyotishi (indian astrologer) to suggest a sound that the baby name should contain in it, like "ni" in Rukmini, or whatever. And so it's not totally uncommon there for the baby to not have a name before birth. DP is currently in India with his parents and families, I told him to keep his ears open while there for name possibilities.

So if there is anyone else out there that doesn't have a strong idea of what they will name their baby, speak up and unite!

We thought we had the perfect name picked out but, I was listening to two mommies talking the other day and realised that "our name" may become one of those trendy mass-used names in a couple of years. I would really hate for my Little One to go to school with 5-6 other children who share the same name. We chose a beautiful traditional Scottish name but when I looked it up in one of those name your baby books, it had ( no joke ) 22 different spellings. So, that's when I got confused. I think my husband and I both decided to just wait until Our Little One arrives and chose a name at birth.

This is essentially the first time I have gotten to name one of my children, so I am going to be VERY picky!

To further complicate matters, I already told ds1 that he would get to help choose a name and ds2 happened to be born on the Friday right at the end of ds1's finals week, so I don't expect to be able to talk names until Monday at the earliest.

I like unusual, meaningful names and ds1 likes "normal" names without any teasing potential, so this could be a very, very lengthy process.

I can't believe how okay I am with this, since I like my kids to be named in utero. Of course, if ds2 names himself while he's waiting on us, then all bets are off.

We want a good name that's not common, but is also not trendy. And it has to be short, bc the baby's going to have both our last names (DH's is 3 syllables, mine is 2). So far my top three are Andre, Emil and Lee. DH has been really really busy with school, so he hasn't had time to really think about names he's seriously considering. (This week is the first time in months he actually has the time, and my EDD is in 4 weeks, hee hee.) We've been talking names the whole time, but the closer it gets to actually having the baby, the more serious it becomes, and a lot of names have been tossed aside...

Also, I think we're going to have a few possibilities with us, bc I feel like we have to see him before we settle on a name - it took my old roommate and I a few weeks to settle on a name for my cat, so I can't imagine naming a baby before I see him!

I agree. I am really hoping that when this little one make his/her debut that the right name will come along too.

NOS: Congratulations again. I am sure that one way or the other your new son will get the right name. It sounds like between you and DS1, you will balance each others extremes and find something perfect for DS2.

No name here, either. I have some favorites, but I'm holding out until I actually see the baby.
