paternity leave - Page 2

DH is the GM of a wine bar. His boss is giving him a paid week off, but he's just getting his hourly pay. He also works several shifts behind the bar, (so we will miss the tips) but it's much better than nothing. The thing that really sucks is that I will have to be the only one getting up with the baby during the night because he typically gets home at 4:30AM 5 days a week (and our 2 1/2 year old is up at 7:30AM). I hope that he will be able to find something more family friendly soon (but a career in wine isn't ever going to be incredibly family friendly).

My DH works for a small company, so it doesn't fall under the FMLA. He has sick and vacation time he can use, he will probably take a week when the baby comes, then a day here and there as needed depending on his workload. No one really does his work while he is out, so he can't let it back up too much.

We have a lot of family around, so if help is needed, I can get it.

Luckily, my DH gets one week PAID paternity leave. I still think it is a little stingy, but it is something. He also has sick/vacation time he could use to extend it. The great thing about his job is that he can work from home if necessary, so at least he can be here if I need him. I think this flexibility will be especially helpful if the baby is sick and cannot go to daycare, once I am back to work. My job is not flexible.

My DH works for a small company too, although he was saying that work has to offer you 12 weeks even if it's a small company and doesn't fall under FMLA - I'm skeptical though.

He only gets 10 paid days off per year and has to use all of that before he can take any unpaid time off for the baby. That kills me! SO, we've decided he'll take up to 8 days off so we can have a little flexibility around holidays like Christmas eve. With this being the first grandchild on all sides, the holidays are bound to get a bit hectic!

We'll figure out how much time dh takes off after baby is born - he has 3 sick days he can take - and 2 weeks of vacation time - and his employer wants him to take the paid time off before taking unpaid time off which really sucks. We're going to FL in April compliments of my parents so that leaves a week of time he has to use - but if we take that week after baby is born, we won't get to visit dh's family AT ALL this year and we usually visit them at least twice! So he'll probably end up taking only 3 days off and then it will be me and 5 kids  I'm going to try to arrange for my parents to take the older 3 or 4 for a day and invite friends over to play with / entertain the kids while I rest some! I just hope this baby isn't born on a Monday or Tuesday because dh's days off are Sat and Sun and that would give me only 3 days (including the day of the birth) with him home before he has to go to work! A Wednesday, Thursday or Friday would be nice!

That is amazing Elyse!! My dh's planning on taking off about 3-4 days then do half days for a week or more to be able to pick up dd from school around 3pm, already have a friend taking her to school for us. It's nice when things work out nicely.

Wow, I'm a little embarrassed at my riches compared to most of you. My dh gets 2 weeks paid paternity leave, is taking 4 weeks of vacation he has saved up, and still has a little over a week of vacation for later. There's also a mindless work thing he can do at home if he finds time and add those hours up to save vacation time. That work gave him an extra week after ds was born, and he'd only do it while ds was sleeping and we were lying around watching movies (or actually TV-on-DVD. I think we watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer in its entirety in those early weeks). I feel like I should offer to babysit older kids for some of you! I can't believe 5 kids + 3 days off, Amanda. That's insane. Here's hoping for a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday!!
