i was at work today and i had an opportunity to talk to a mom who had a 6 week old. she had been having problems with projectile vomiting and was told by her ped that she was "allergic to breastmilk" and to start on formula. the baby kept losing weight and continuing to vomit and was finally diagnosed with pyloric stenosis. she had surgery today.
mom wasn't very optimistic about breastfeeding again but it had only been a couple of weeks since she stopped and she said she did still have milk.
i talked to her for a long time about getting the baby back on her breast, and got her some pamphlets from our lactation services and encouraged her to check in at MDC and to look up her local LLL or nursing mom's group in her county.
by the end of our talk she was anxious to get her baby from the recovery room and start breastfeeding again as soon as the surgeon said it was ok. i told her to tell the nurses to call an LC to come and see her before her daughter was discharged.
i'm so hoping that it works out for her and she gets back to nursing her baby. she seemed to really want to and was just so discouraged that her peds seemed so set against it since the baby was "allergic".
everyone i work with was kind of laughing at me and my enthusiastic lactivism but they all think i'm crazy for nursing mine as long as i did.
