Should Women Have the Right to Breastfeed Wherever They'd Like

How is this even a debate?

This is from a magazine's monthly "Mom Debate". Gah. How did I end up with this subscription and why did I read it? Weigh in HERE.

The sad part is 12% (likely women) have voted no.

Blech, thanks for reminding me why I never look at that magazine any more.

I don't even understand the question....why don't they ask "Should babies be 'allowed' to eat wherever they want?"
I voted! And wrote them a message about it too!

It is sad that 12 % say no.. however, I honestly thought it would have been higher! haha There are some crazies out there who just hate the boob!!

Gahhh! I HATE these surveys! I don't NIP because it's something I would like to do, or something I have the "need to do".

Exactly!

I wrote them a note too. I am so sick of people wanting to make women and children second-class citizens.

How pathetic. What kind of question is that???

I had to click on this because my response was,
"well, yeah"
and I thought everyone else's response (here) would be the same. Then I started thinking about situations where I might think bfing isn't appropriate (the server here is pretty slow) and I came up with a few... a baby should not be taken out of a carseat and breastfed in a moving vehicle (this used to be allowable under WI law). and I could see justification for not being allowed to breastfeed in other dangerous situations as well, I just can't think of anything right now off the top of my head.

But the bottom line, as I see it, is that whether or not women should be allowed to breastfeed in a situation should be dependent on the health and safety of the baby and or the woman, NOT on the viewpoints of passersby.

No. I can think of several situations where breastfeeding is inappropriate.

Babies should not be nursed underwater, while skydiving, in the oven, or during a gunfight.

I agree!

I won't nurse while I'm sitting in church. My loud nurser would be distracting to those sitting around me. I nurse sitting around after. My church is wonderful and provides a cozy parent room though. My nursing son is my escuse to sit there.
I think there are (very few) situations where nursing may not be a good idea. Most of them are my personal hang up about my nursing, not that should be applied to all nursing though.

Keep voting!!!

I checked today and noticed that the percent went up from 88 to 89% for yes...

I would love to see a 1 digit number for the no's!!! (Well, I'd love for this question to not even BE a question that must be asked, but in the time being, I'll settle for an overwhelming majority of support.)

I don't have to take dd out of her carseat to nurse. I just buckle up, lean over, and nurse her IN her carseat-lol!

Thank you!! I couldn't agree more.

When I was still bf'ing my son, sometimes we had to pull over to the side of the road and park, so I could get in the back and nurse him. It was the only way to get him to sleep in his car seat for a long time... I never thought of simply leaning over and giving him a nip while he was buckled in! I Love it!!

I have also done this. Once on 494 in Minneapolis-- I got a few strange looks for that one. :

Of course your examples are fun and silly, but we all realize that even those don't have to do with breastfeeding!

Good Lord -- I just wasted a lot of time sending them an email.

Also, I have spent waaaaay too much time leaning over the carseat to nurse. For those who haven't tried it... it's not very comfortable, but hey -- it gets you from Point A to Point B.
